The always great Willem Dafoe received an Oscar nomination this year for his performance in this humanist indie feature. Dafoe plays the empathetic manager of The Magic Castle, a budget Florida motel that's home to those with nowhere else to go. Among the guests are six-year- old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) and her struggling mother Halley (Bria Vinaite), and it's the former's unsupervised escapades with her friends that drives this affecting and bittersweet look at how childhood innocence can prevail amidst harsh circumstances. An honest, slice of life drama with a documentary feel, The Florida Project is recommended to fans of American Honey . AC

From Assassin's Creed to The Da Vinci Code , the Knights Templar continue to fascinate. The religious military order is also the subject of this lavish new History Channel series. The story begins following the Templars defeat at the Siege of Acre in 1291, and the loss of the Holy Grail. The brooding Landry du Lauzon (Tom Cullen) was present at this momentous event, and more than a decade on, the Templars are threatened with irrelevance. Landry longs to prove himself in battle once again, and events are aligning to bring this about. Like Vikings , Knightfall delivers a rousing – albeit very loose – dramatisation of historical figures and events. AC

Stephan Elliott has never repeated the success of his breakout hit The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert , but that hasn’t stopped him from trying. His latest comedy is a semi-autobiographical coming- of-age tale set in the beach suburb of Wallaroo, where the carcass of a blue whale has just washed ashore. Sharing more in common with Welcome to Woop Woop than Priscilla , this is a rude, crude and wonderfully kitsch celebration of the swinging seventies, complete with hideous fashion, bogan stereotypes, irresponsible parenting, and a true blue cast including Guy Pearce, Asher Keddie, Jack Thompson – and even Kylie Minogue. Vincent (Xavier Samuel) is a crime writer whose success may well be predicated on firsthand experience. Following the unsolved murder of his wife, Vincent hooks up with Carrie (Morgan Griffin), but when a sinister hooded figure begins stalking him, along with a nosy private detective ((Rob Macpherson), the couple retreat to a remote property, where a surprise twist awaits. Continuing the run of locally made genre films, this suspenseful psychological thriller sees a deadly game of cat and mouse played out in claustrophobic surrounds. Fans of Stephen King are advised to check it out. AC
