3D PRINTERS YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Start simple or step up?
Imagine turning an idea into something you can actually hold. From handy household fixes to one of-a-kind creations, 3D printing makes it possible. And getting started is easier than you might think. Here’s everything you need to know. Words Scott Hocking
OPEN-FRAME: Best for PLA beginners who want easy access and a lower starting price.
What is a 3D printer and how does it work? Imagine a hot-glue gun following a digital blueprint – only with much better aim. A filament 3D printer feeds plastic through a heated nozzle, laying it down in thin lines. Layer by layer, a physical object takes shape. This method is called FDM or FFF. Choose a digital model, prepare it with software called a slicer, then send the instructions to your printer. No factory required.
Are 3D printers easy to set up and use? Forget the complicated machines of yesteryear. Today's 3D printers do much of the hard work for you. Many printers arrive mostly assembled, with guided setup, automatic calibration, and apps that help you choose a 3D model and hit Print. Start with something small and simple, such as a bag clip or cable tidy, and you’ll soon get the idea. There’s still some trial and error. A dirty build plate or incorrect filament settings can lead to the occasional failed print, but that’s all part of the learning curve. And you don’t need coding skills or 3D design experience to get started. Which type of 3D printer should I buy? Before you start dreaming up your first masterpiece, think about what you want to print
ENCLOSED: Best for more demanding materials and projects that benefit from stable printing temperatures. Multicolour and larger builds depend on the model, not the enclosure.
