WELCOME

This year marks 30 years since Paul Thomas Anderson made his directorial debut, Hard Eight , which afforded him an illustrious career with films like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood and Phantom Thread . That same year, Leonardo DiCaprio was rapidly ascending to the heights of Hollywood in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet . Both men have become titans of the industry, and now their forces collide in one of 2025's best films, One Battle After Another . It’s impossible to deny the power of the film, which offers not only a non-partisan critique of the current political climate, but also delivers a fierce thriller that’s as funny as it is compelling. Having the film hit all of the physical media formats this month is the perfect way to kick-start what is sure to be a massive year in movies. Also out this month is Spinal Tap II: The End Continues , which has become a tribute to the legacy of the late, great Rob Reiner following his tragic passing last month. His was an incredible and diverse career, marked by so many classic films. A legacy that turns the dial well above 11. Glenn Cochrane, Movie & TV Editor

Once a rising Hollywood hotshot, Paul Thomas Anderson is now one of cinema’s most respected auteurs. Frequent collaborators include Philip Seymour Hoffman, Philip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Luis Guzmán, Julianne Moore, and William H. Macy. Growing up with no father figure, the South Korean movie Miracle in Cell No. 7 has been one of my inspirations. This movie tackles injustice and how life can be unfair sometimes. It also taught me how to give back to my family and friends who shaped me as a person. What’s one of your all-time favourite movies, and why? Hacksaw Ridge is one of the best movies of all time. This movie teaches us that violence is not always the right answer for war. The pacifist Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) also taught us not to give up on our colleagues no matter how tough the situation is. What’s one of your all-time favourite TV series, and why? Lucifer is one of my all-time favourites. Being an urban fantasy, this series also tackles drama, romance, comedy, etc. It also has good character developments which enhances the series the further you are in. If you like angels and demons, it’s a must. What have you been watching lately that you’d recommend? I have been watching The Last of Us recently. This TV series has some of the most unique zombies I’ve seen. I just love how Joel and Ellie survive out in the wild and seeing how Joel becomes a father figure for Ellie deeper in the series touches my heart. Full of action and some romance.

FAIRY TALE: 100 YEARS QUEST SEASON 1 (JB EXCLUSIVE STEELBOOK) Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest doesn’t try

to reinvent the wheel, instead delivering a fresh adventure that leans into everything fans love about the original Fairy Tail series. The humour remains sharp, the soundtrack is as energetic as ever, and the show’s playful tone is firmly intact. This new chapter follows the Fairy Tail Guild as they take on the daunting 100 Years Quest, setting their sights on sealing away the powerful Dragon Gods. Standing in their way is a rival guild intent on consuming the dragons to steal their power, while a mysterious new recruit’s dark secret threatens to complicate the mission. Blu-ray | Jan 7

reincarnated as your favourite video game villain, armed with all the knowledge from playing the game beforehand? You would use that knowledge to make sure you come out on top, of course. In I’ll Become a Villainess , Alicia Williams is reborn as the villain of a dating RPG and quickly sets her mind on ensuring her ultimate success, determined to outwit the “heroine” and shape her own destiny. The series is fun, clever, and beautifully animated, offering plenty of humour, twists, and charm that will delight longtime fans of this subgenre. Blu-ray | Jan 7

and is far from as frivolous as the title suggests. While the humour remains, Rimuru’s life as a slime brings unexpected twists with serious consequences. The story’s pace quickens as his plans begin to take shape and his newly founded nation seems poised for success. However, rival forces from the Harlequin Alliance and the Western Holy Church pursue their own goals of domination. Peace is possible but far from guaranteed, and as conflicts escalate it becomes unclear who will ultimately hold power. This season balances comedy, intrigue, and high-stakes adventure with finesse. Attention movie lovers! 2026 is already looking huge, with some serious heavy hitters on the horizon. Here are a few that have caught our eye. What’s on your radar? Words Glenn Cochrane

Project: Hail Mary

The Magic Faraway Tree

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

The Odyssey

Scream 7 (February) We love a good franchise, and there are plenty of reasons to get excited for Scream 7 . Thirty years after Wes Craven reshaped horror, original writer Kevin Williamson finally steps up to direct a fresh new chapter. Neve Campbell returns after sitting out the last film, joining Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown. New blood enters the fray too, with Joel McHale, Anna Camp, Isabel May, and Ethan Embry rounding out the cast. Project: Hail Mary (March) The trailers for Project: Hail Mary have us hooked, teasing just enough to leave us wanting more! Ryan Gosling stars as Earth’s last hope, the only person with the knowledge to save humanity from a cosmic disaster. From the creative minds behind Into the Spider Verse and 21 Jump Street , this epic sci-fi adventure promises a thrilling ride that blends the wonder of Interstellar with the ingenuity of The Martian . We’re all in!

The Magic Faraway Tree (March)

Michael (April) We’ve seen countless music biopics in recent years, but none as highly anticipated as the story of Michael Jackson. With director Antoine Fuqua ( Training Day ) at the helm and the blessing of Jackson’s estate, confidence is high that this will be a powerful musical drama. Jaafar Jackson stars as his late uncle, supported by Colman Domingo, Miles Teller, and Nia Long. With Michael’s biggest hits included, it’s sure to be an emotional and toe-tapping experience. Masters of the Universe (June) Travis Knight, who brought us Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee , is taking on a big-budget, live-action take on the '80s cartoon classic Masters of the Universe . Rising star Nicholas Galitzine suits up as He-Man, while Jared Leto steps into Skeletor’s villainous shoes. Idris Elba and Alison Brie join the fun. Plenty of attempts have tried to bring He-Man back to the big screen, but this one’s got us seriously excited!

Supergirl (June) We got our first taste of Supergirl in James Gunn’s Superman. Now she’s back in her own movie, set to launch the new DC Universe into an exciting era. Fans are thrilled that it’s adapted from the popular comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow . All we know is that she’ll travel across the galaxy with her superdog Krypto for her 21st birthday, facing a tragedy along the way. If Superman is any guide, there’s plenty to be excited about. The Odyssey (July) Is there a more epic tale than Homer’s Odyssey ? Christopher Nolan, fresh off Oppenheimer , is taking on Greek mythology to bring the story of the king of Ithaca and the Trojan War to life. The cast is stacked with Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, and more. Tickets for select IMAX screenings sold out a year in advance, hinting at just how massive this cinematic journey will be.

For older generations, The Magic Faraway Tree is a nostalgic trip into Enid Blyton’s beloved world, and for younger viewers, it’s a fresh, magical adventure. From the creators of Paddington and Wonka , the story has a family whisked away when they discover a magical tree near their new farmhouse. Starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, with Rebecca Ferguson, Jennifer Saunders, and Michael Palin rounding out the cast, it’s set to be the family film of the year! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April) Few saw 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie becoming such a mega hit, which makes this sequel one of the year’s most anticipated releases. With the same creative team returning and Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy and other returning players, we’re confident Illumination will deliver another unforgettable blockbuster. The biggest question is will Bowser top his unforgettable Peaches number or give us an entirely new musical moment just as hilariously iconic?

# 1 MY FIRST ALBUM

Which recent album do you currently have on repeat? Doechii - Alligator Bites Never Heal. What’s your all-time

The first album I ever purchased was The Eagles’ Their Greatest Hits (1971 1975). I’d been given a ghetto blaster, which was a cassette player, for my birthday and this was the cassette I bought to play in it. I’m definitely showing my age in saying that CDs had not yet been invented... hence the cassette. Yes, I still have the album and have several versions of it, though, unfortunately, I never purchased it on vinyl at the time as I couldn’t afford it. It’s a beautiful collection of songs and incredibly well performed. I learned to play half of them in the first year of owning the album and still play some of them to this day. They have stood the test of time, impeccably. JAMES BLUNDELL

favourite album and why? I’d have to say A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders , Wu Tang Clan - 36 Chambers , Lauryn Hill - Miseducation or Nas - Illmatic . These to me are perfect albums from the production to the rhymes to the cover art to the impact and influence they had on the genre. Do you have a vinyl collection? If so, how did it begin, and expand? Yes! At 16 I decided I wanted to be a DJ so saved up for turntables and started building my record collection. My favourite store to shop at was known as the home of hip-hop in Sydney. As time went on, I was offered a job at the store and eventually took over for a number of years while also touring the country as a DJ, hosting my own radio show on FBi radio and doing guest spots on Triple J. I also went on record buying trips to Japan and Europe and was on plenty of promo lists being serviced by record labels. Safe to say, I’ve amassed quite the collection! What do you enjoy most about working in music at JB? Talking about music!

What’s an early, cherished music memory? Seeing Run DMC posters up on my friends older brother’s bedroom wall in ‘88 and being so intrigued and mesmerised by their look. He later played me the Tougher Than Leather album and it was game over. I was hooked.

Your funeral song? Ring of Fire – Johnny Cash. Happiness is… Self-love.

What would be your Hard Quiz expert subject? Country music Song you wish you’d written? Crazy – Willie Nelson. If you weren’t a rock star, what would you be? A stylist. I love fashion and being creative with clothes and bringing out personality through what you wear. Last album you bought?
