When Marty returns to his office after his fishing break, Visser hands him a photo of the apparently bloodied bodies of both Abby and Ray. Chaos now ensues in a maelstrom of ‘blood simple’ misunderstandings involving each character, leading to abject violence and murder. The four main actors, who were all practically unknown when the film was first released, delivered outstanding performances, especially M. Emmett Walsh and Frances McDormand. Originally, the role of Abby was offered to actress Holly Hunter, who had to turn it down. Instead, she persuaded her roommate Frances to audition for the part. The following year, McDormand married Joel Coen and went on to win four Oscars. Blood Simple hit screens in 1984 and proved extremely popular with audiences, so much so that the Coen brothers would never have to beg for movie money again.
