Berserk burst onto the scene as a manga in the late '80s, quickly becoming known for its absurdly dark and twisted fantasy horror world. It’s since been adapted into anime a few times over the years, and the most recent release can FOR THE HARDCORE FANS
The world of anime is as wide as it is weird. There’s so much to love, and with the medium more popular than ever, there’s never been a better time to dive in. Words Michael Caverzan
be considered a contender for the best of them. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc - Memorial Edition recuts previously released films into one series, while adding to scenes and tidying up some of the animation. It’s absolutely dark and terribly brutal, while weaving an inspiring tale of struggle and sacrifice.
For the sentimental
Almost anyone who watches anime has heard of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End , and for good reason. The animation is stunning, but it’s the story that truly resonates. Frequently moving and deeply sincere, Frieren’s journey across her long
Knowing the genres! The genres of anime go well beyond the basics of regular cinema and television, dividing things up with much greater granularity. There are the big ones, of course, like shoujo – think Sailor Moon or Ouran Highschool Host Club - that are geared toward specific demographics. But then things start to splinter off pretty quickly and soon there are subgenres within subgenres.
life becomes a poignant reminder of the value of connection, even when it’s fleeting. Series this universally beloved are rare, and rarer still are those that sustain such quality throughout. In that regard, Frieren succeeds completely.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the most popular, as well as lesser known ones.
Slice of life! What seems pretty self explanatory on the surface actually hides quite a bit of diversity. Slice of life anime pay special attention to what would otherwise be unimportant moments in characters’ lives. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid , a fantasy slice of life, is a delightfully weird series, while Wolf Children is a powerful look into parenthood. Mahou Shoujo! A lot of people’s favourites belong to the magical girls of the Maho Shoujo subgenre. Sailor Moon is perhaps the most well known, accompanied by classics like Cardcaptor Sakura , or more mature but just as enjoyable shows such as Madoka Magica and Wonder Egg Priority .
Isekai! Literally translated as ‘another world,’ Isekai anime sees people ripped from their own worlds and transported into a completely different one. Often with an incredibly long and sometimes specific title, Isekai regularly shakes things up in very unexpected ways. Titles like Kemono Michi or Reborn as a Vending Machine are a great place to start. Shonen! Targeted toward young men, the Shonen genre boasts some of the biggest successes in anime. It’s an incredibly diverse space, spanning everything from the psychic-powered heroics of Mob Psycho 100 , to the card-battling Egyptian gods of Yu-Gi-Oh! , and the ever-escalating power of the Super Saiyans in Dragon Ball .
FOR THE KIDS
Best remembered from the early 1980s, Astro Boy was, for many, a first introduction to Japanese animation. Accessible
and guided by gentle themes, it remains a true classic with a message that continues to resonate. Adopted by the eccentric but well-meaning Dr Elefun, Astro Boy is a robot abandoned by his creator. Beyond his super strength and rocket powered flight, his greatest power is his boundless kindness and selflessness. With his adoptive father as his guide, Astro Boy learns to use his abilities to better the world around him. it remains a true
