MUSIC INTERVIEW

G rinspoon singer Phil Jamieson says he hates the term “still got it”. “Arguably, I didn’t have it,” he laughs, “and now I’ve got it.” There’s no doubt that Grinspoon remain a remarkable band. Their new album, whatever, whatever , shows they can still swing effortlessly from metal to melody. “The songs dictate whether I’m going to be screaming or singing,” Jamieson says. “That’s what I like about our band, so that’s why I do it. I want to punch people in the face and then give them a cuddle – in a metaphorical sense, of course.” It’s been a long road for Jamieson and the Grinners, who will next year celebrate their 30th birthday. “You know how there’s that classic tattoo ‘No Regrets’? I think if I got one, it would say, ‘Some Regrets’.” GRINNERS ARE WINNERS Grinspoon return with a rocking new record – their first in 12 years. Words Jeff Jenkins

Grinspoon are launching their new album with a 45 date tour. Yep, 45 shows. This is old-school touring, with the band going to every state, plus the Northern Territory. “A lot of thought and planning went into it,” Phil Jamieson says. “But the funny thing is that people

still find a problem with it: ‘But it’s on a Wednesday…’ But we’re there – take a day off work or something!” The singer loves life on the road. “There’s nothing like the three-hour drive after a show, the 9am checkout from the hotel, and the first stop to get a Chiko Roll and strawberry milk

(black coffee for me, I am now an adult).” And he loves nothing more than the show itself. “The fun part is walking into a room and turning it into a gig. The challenge of making something out of nothing. Making magic happen.”

TOMORROW IS HERE Beabadoobee is all grown up on her stunning third album. Words Jeff Jenkins

“I love this album,” Beabadoobee says of This Is How Tomorrow Moves . “I feel like it’s helped me so much more than anything else has in navigating this new era… I guess it’s about becoming a woman. “In my previous records, I would consistently sing about my reaction towards other people’s doings, like a blame game. But in this record, it’s accepting that there’s an inevitability of my fault in there too. Whether it’s childhood trauma or relationship issues, it takes two to tango in everything.” Beabadoobee – who was born Beatrice Laus in the Philippines 24 years ago, moving to West London when she was three – has built a following touring with Taylor Swift, The 1975, Halsey, and Clairo. The new album follows 2022’s Beatopia , which was a Top 20 hit in Australia.

THE WISDOM OF RICK

Here are six pieces of Rick Rubin wisdom: “We are dealing in a magic realm. Nobody knows why or how it works.”

This Is How Tomorrow Moves was co-produced by the great American record producer Rick Rubin, who has helped craft hit records for the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks, and Johnny Cash.

“Creativity is a fundamental aspect of being human. It’s our birthright. And it’s for all of us.” “Beware of the assumption that the way you work is the best way simply because it’s the way you’ve done it before.” “Sometimes disengaging is the best way to engage.” “Taking a wrong turn allows you to see landscapes you wouldn’t otherwise have seen.” “Do what you can with what you have. Nothing more is needed.”

He recently released a book called The Creative Act: A Way of Being .
