T he days of enlisting the services of an expensive technician to install cameras around the home are, thankfully, long gone. New technology has made it practically foolproof for homeowners looking for cost effective security solutions. With a few simple steps, you can be tapping into a live feed from your smartphone in no time at all. What’s available? For getting eyes on your prize, there are two main options available to you: a video doorbell, or security cameras. Video doorbells, one of the most popular security options, can be either hardwired (you need an existing, traditional doorbell wiring in place) or powered via a rechargeable battery. Video doorbells not only cover the entry with a video feed but also enable two-way talk. This means that you can chat with whoever is at the door, even if you’re not home, or use pre recorded audio.

and some even have a solar panel to keep the battery topped up. How do they work? This part couldn’t be easier. All you need to do is download the companion app and follow the installation prompts. Sometimes, kickstarting the installation process can be as easy as scanning a QR code on the base of a unit. Both wireless and wired cameras connect to a home Wi-Fi network, so you’ll need those details and the password on hand to enable smooth connection. Are they easy to install? Yes, especially if you – or a partner/friend – have some basic DIY skills. Internal cameras generally come with a stand, so you just need to plonk them where you need them. For wall-mounted brackets, you’ll need a drill, screwdriver and, depending on the height, possibly a ladder.
