GRINSPOON NEW DETENTION (2003) 20TH ANNIVERSARY GREEN VINYL

All it takes to kick off your reinvention-comeback, Grinspoon taught us in 2003, is a lone few but masterly-chosen notes on a guitar. The opening of Chemical Heart – written for 16-year-old Jessica Michalik, who tragically died during a Limp Bizkit crowd-crush at 2001’s Big Day Out – is a lesson in belief of purpose. The ’ballad’ (by Grinspoon’s standards; previous album Easy was bursting with punk-rock abandon) lead what would become Grinners’ highest-charting record, which signaled a pivot in pace but no less heart and innovative spirit from the Lismore four-piece, led by irrepressible frontman Phil Jamieson. TOP TRACK: Lost Control FAST FACT: Grinspoon performed at the 2001 funeral of Jessica Michalik; they were the teen’s favourite band. Creedence Clearwater Revival’s calibre for writing short, memorable songs is practically unrivalled. Lords of commercial rock radio and synonymous with an array of Vietnam War movies, the Bay Area band’s enviable output under the Creedence moniker over a four-year window would deliver stone-cold classics like the fury-driven Fortunate Son , Who’ll Stop the Rain, and the ominously themed two-minute jangle of Bad Moon Rising . Creedence’s fervent popularity in Australia remains undiminished, with a strong sales history and a continued presence on playlists and radio nationwide. Consequently, this double album collection has been curated specifically for Australian audiences, and the JB exclusive edition features both records cut on beautiful red vinyl. THE SMITHS THE QUEEN IS DEAD (1986) All elements aligned for the

Mancunians' third and finest album, The Queen Is Dead , released in 1986. Thriving in the public spotlight, Morrisey used this soapbox to lead his pen in a reflection of the chaotic world around him. Ever the lonely romantic, Morrissey’s poetic flair was matched in union by the musical talent of Johnny Marr, who, at only 22, worked hard in the studio to craft layers and textures to his guitar sound. The album had singles in the melancholic The Boy With the Thorn in His Side , and Bigmouth Strikes Again; contemplative moments such as I Know It’s Over ; and trademark Moz witticism

in Frankly, Mr. Shankly and Cemetry Gates. A flawless record, The Queen Is Dead broke new ground for the band with a more accessible sound, and also marked the crest of the Smiths’ creative voyage. If you’re only going to own one Smiths’ LP, this is it. TOP TRACK: I Know It’s Over FAST FACT: The cover, designed by Morrissey, features French actor Alain Delon from the 1964 movie, L’Insoumis .

POWDERFINGER VULTURE STREET (2003) 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

There’s a devil-may-care esprit to Powderfinger’s fifth album, and that’s for very good reason: the Brissie lads weren’t on the dole any more, thanks to the success of 2000’s Odyssey Number Five and its worldwide tour. “Following the landscape-y sounds of ON5, we hooked into writing songs that carried more punch,” the band explained when announcing this

Erinsborough was never going to contain Delta Goodrem for long. In November 2002, just a few days after her 18th birthday, the pianist-singer’s debut single Born to Try hit Aussie radio. As we listened to her hitting stratospheric registers singing about learning to love, we wondered: Who

a knock-out. (Baby I’ve Got You) On My Mind showcased drummer John Coghill’s driving kitwork and Ian Haug’s assertive approach to lead guitar lines, not to mention frontman Bernard Fanning’s distinctive, wry whip of a vocal. Love Your Way introduced an effortless dynamism which would become the band’s calling card, while Since You’ve Been Gone – inspired by the death of Fanning’s brother in 2002 – also offered the now-familiar penchant of Fanning’s for flinging his voice aerial for just a note or two before returning to his main melody. Vulture Street was a smashing success, winning four ARIAs from seven nominations in 2003 including Album of the Year. is this teenager!? It turned out we already knew her: as schoolgirl Nina Tucker on Neighbours . But Goodrem quickly left the ’burbs behind when everything she touched turned into a #1: first Born to Try , then its whimsical ballad follow-up Lost Without You , then the debut album from which they both came, and then three more singles from Innocent Eyes hit the top spot of the ARIA chart – including the fabulous title track, which established Goodrem’s fierce talents in the mysterious minor keys and proved she wasn’t just nine-grains wholesome. Innocent Eyes (the album) went on to be the biggest selling record in Australia of the entire decade, and remains as breathlessly delightful as it was 20 years ago. Go Delts! TOP TRACK: Innocent Eyes FAST FACT: When Innocent Eyes ’ fifth single Predictable hit #1, Goodrem broke an ARIA record previously held by Kylie Minogue, for the most consecutive numbers ones from a debut album.
