fingertips, which meant we were able to try our hand with them freely. The funny part of the story is that when we moved
out, we stole half of Dad’s gear, so now I have a big basket of it at home. Chances are those exotic percussive parts that you hear are probably coming from one of his pieces. Don’t tell Dad! To be honest, I try my hand at playing drums and percussion on some of the tracks, but I'm lucky enough to work with a really talented musician named, Ben Edgar. His magic is
intwined through a lot of what you will be hearing with percussion in that way. He is an absolute legend!

ANGUS STONE PEELS THE LEMON
Golden God presents like a chilled manifesto or desiderata (“If she wants to go get lost in someone else’s eyes/ Just let it be
son, let it be… One day you’ll understand/ It’s best to let the horses run free”). It’s the longest song on the record – you really let yourself stretch it out. How did this one come together? It compartmentalises a few stories in one song. Part of it is me exploring the way I live my life: I want to live free, but I also understand the restraints of the world, and I think a big part of growing up, and becoming the person that we become, is letting go of things we can’t control. Then, part of this song is me navigating through the things I see in the world and also that I see in myself; this song is a universe unto itself. However, when it gets to the chorus, it’s talking about if you’re in love with somebody and they’re maybe no longer in that place – it’s okay, it’s not the end of the world. This is the basis of the lyric 'One day you’ll understand it’s best to let the horses run free'...
Having discovered his Dope Lemon moniker could be a vehicle to more personal songwriting, Angus Stone has ditched the fuzzy-faced smooth big cat and embraced a new era – but the lemonhead is still sauntering with all the cool of a tall glass o' fizz on the seafront. We shot Stone some questions about the very awesome Kimosabè . Words Zoë Radas
that we actually reached out to Will Ferrell and John C Reilly, who had to listen to the song to approve it. So, just that in itself is a big salute and knowing that they played a part in making these tracks what they are is classic. You’re such a lover of auxiliary percussion – we can hear flexatone, cabasa, vibraslap and temple blocks just in the opening track! Do you have a great big collection of percussiony things? We grew up in quite a musical family. My dad was a conductor, and in the lounge room we had all types of percussive instruments at our
You’ve sampled a couple of classic lines from Step Brothers (2008) in the title track for the album – and there’s a sneaky Forgetting Sarah Marshall line in your closing track. Why do you think these are such enduring movies after 15 years? I’ve always been a big fan of Will Ferrell and John C Reilly. I think across the board, their style, who they are and what they do is unmatched. All of the SNL and Steve Brule characters that they’ve created are still, to this day, absolute knee-slappers, and are good times for rolling up and having a laugh. In terms of using the lines themselves, it was really cool

Even if you aren't a one-eyed Miley fan, you'll recall the zeitgeist-obliterating moments when Wrecking Ball spread across the globe. The second single from Cyrus' massive 2013 album Bangerz, Wrecking Ball was reportedly about the very fresh breakdown of the singer's engagement to Oz actor (and Thor's bro) Liam Hemsworth; Cyrus cried while performing the hit live for the first time in September '23, and again at a pre-Superbowl party in 2021, telling the crowd that “it never gets easier.” Upon Wrecking Ball 's release, its songwriter Sacha Skarbek tweeted his amazement that the track he'd penned with Beyonce in mind had gone to Cyrus: “Good/bad? I don't know??!!!!” he wrote. For Miley, it was very good: Wrecking Ball hit number one around the world.
