Each month we hand-pick a collection of reissues, limited editions or just straight classic long-players that deserve a place in any record collection. Words Paul Jones, Amy Flower & Zoë Radas for Living EP, and album opener Disorder is a perfect encapsulation of just what that sound was, combining shades of the Velvet Underground with Curtis’ inimitable desperation-tinged lyrics and delivery. Day of the Lords slows things down, adding a bit more gothic to the mix, as the side careens towards its epic conclusion, the masterpiece that is New Dawn Fades with its guitar ascending/bass descending collision. A double whammy of primo JD awaits those who brave side two, with the relentless She’s Lost Control and atmospheric Shadowplay , while tracks such as Wilderness and closer I Remember Nothing leave you in no doubt as to where Curtis’s head was at. He took his own life in May 1980, with no clue as to the legacy that he’d leave, as his bandmates soldiered onto the New Order story. TOP TRACK: New Dawn Fades FAST FACT: Despite the popularity of such tracks as Shadowplay and She’s Lost Control , no singles were released from Unknown Pleasures , until the latter was re-recorded as a B-side for the brilliant 1980 12-inch single Atmosphere .

JOY DIVISION UNKNOWN PLEASURES (1979) 180GM VINYL REISSUE Every band has to start somewhere,

but it’s only the greats whose debut albums become vital cogs in the musical timeline. This, Joy Division’s debut, is one such critical historical dot point, regarded by many as essential to any record

collection. The Manchester quartet of Ian Curtis, Peter Hook, Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris are one of those post-punk bands forged after encountering the Sex Pistols in their hometown in June of 1976, along with the likes of The Smiths and The Fall. Coupled with the mad genius experimental production powers of Martin Hannett, Joy Division found their sound after the wobbly Ideal

HOODOO GURUS MARS NEEDS GUITARS (1985) VINYL REISSUE After letting loose a debut album as strong as Stoneage Romeos , some of a follow-up. Instead, Hoodoo Gurus just got down to it, crafting a more mature, yet just as hook-laden tune-fest that contains more than one classic Aussie anthem. As side ones go, this is a belter, kicking off with the album’s first single Bittersweet , and not letting up from the scathing Poison Pen to the driving In the Wild , then the emotional whack of Death Defying and stomptastic side closer Like Wow-Wipeout . Side two starts with a classic country-twangin’ tale in Hayride to Hell , then winds through more top melody-infused rock before a reverb-drenched send-off in She . Mars Needs Guitars is a freak out, but only in the best sense of the term. TOP TRACK: Death Defying FAST FACT: The album title is a homage to the 1968 made-for-TV sci-fi flick Mars Needs Women , starring ’60s Batgirl herself Yvonne Craig as a Pulitzer Prize-winning space geneticist. bands might freak out at the prospect

DIESEL HEPFIDELITY 30 (1992) 30TH ANNIVERSARY WHITE VINYL EDITION

FLEETWOOD MAC RUMOURS (1977)

The Chain was almost dropped from the final cut. It sat on tapes as a collection of different parts with Buckingham returning to the

The opening bars of Man Alive – relentlessly building organ, gleaming tambo, and that ever-so- ’90s chopped-up pan flute effect

scattered elements at the 12th hour to provide the creative sinew required to pull it together. Its composition is perhaps a sonic reflection of the tumultuous and hedonistic production of Rumours ; the stories have become as popular as the songs on it. The track list is the band’s high tide – just reconnoitre the top ten singles: Go Your Own Way, Dreams, Don’t Stop and You Make Loving Fun . And commercial radio staples Second Hand News, Gold Dust Woman and The Chain have kept the royalties ticking over since ’77. Rumours turns 45 this year. Look at any vinyl chart and you’ll see her permanently moored in its top ten. It’s more than the holy grail – it’s the perfect record. TOP TRACK: The Chain FAST FACT: During the recording of Never Going Back Again , producer Ken Caillat asked for the guitar strings to be replaced every 20 minutes. It took a day to record and once completed, Buckingham realised it was in the wrong key.

– signalled that Johnny Diesel & the Injectors had escaped the paddock. It was a fresh epoch for the newly mononymous Diesel, who’d tasted solo success the year before with his debut single (the rudely funky Love Junk ) and was starting to believe there was more on his cards than just playing guitar in Jimmy Barnes’ band. His fate was sealed with the insane success of Tip of My Tongue (which still has no business being so sexual), and a month later Hepfidelity dropped, earning Diesel a number one spot on the charts, two ARIAs, and critical acclaim. The 30th anniversary edition includes ten new songs which slip effortlessly into the Hep world and are guaranteed to intoxicate, including the classic gospel-rock stomp of Heart of Stone , the Prince-pawed Mercurial Girl , and saunteringly

carnal closer Piece of You . TOP TRACK: Tip of My Tongue

FAST FACT: The first time Diesel listened to Hepfidelity front to back was poolside at the late Michael Gudinski’s home, a memory the artist describes as “vivid and humbling.”
