What’s one of your all-time favourite films, and why?
Jaws: The Revenge (AKA Jaws 4) is easily the greatest film of all time. Yeah, it might have killed the franchise, but there’s so much fun to be had here. After three movies of non-stop big shark attacks on Amity Island, the Brody family finally decide to move away to the Bahamas, only for the shark to follow them anyway! I highly recommend this glorious masterpiece.
ADAM McDOWELL @ JB Bunbury, WA
What’s one of your all-time favourite TV series, and why?
Thank God You’re Here . I wish they’d bring it back. This was a show that introduced me to many of Australia’s greatest comedians, many of whom (Josh Lawson, Angus Sampson, etc) have gone on to star in big blockbuster films. I’ve always enjoyed improv comedy and have fond memories of coming up with my own TGYH scenes in my high school drama classes. It’s time for a reboot!

What’s a movie you saw as a child that has left a lasting impression on you?
Nathan Fielder’s new show, The Rehearsal . A brilliant follow-up to his previous show Nathan for You , yet unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. The series features elaborately staged scenarios that recreate parts of ordinary people’s lives, and are meant to help them prepare for an upcoming big moment. You’ll be hooked in the first five minutes – don’t miss this hilarious docu-comedy!
The Wizard of Oz made me fall in love with musicals. A Nightmare on Elm Street and its sequels started my love of B-grade horror-comedy. Mix them together and you have my personal style as an indie filmmaker: horror/musical-comedies!

With Julia Stiles portraying Esther’s first “adopted mother”, the Bourne star says Fuhrman totally owned the role. “I don't think it could have been made without her. One of the exciting things is to see her performance and how she’s completely convincing as a child... I don't think anybody else could have played that role, nor would it have been as interesting or as satisfying. “Even though Brent was getting threatened online, that nobody else could play that part, I think Isabelle really pulled it off. It's amazing to watch.” Fuhrman admits she was never going to sit quietly and let someone else play the role she originated. “ Orphan was my first movie, and I fell in love with Esther's desire to find love. Maybe not going about it the right way, but when I was younger, I really resonated with that. “So it was really fun for me to revisit Esther from a different perspective. Brent and I talked a lot about how we wanted to make sure we captured some love for Esther; that the audience would find places to root for her and have her almost succeed. Even if you don't particularly like her, she did become such a beloved character after the original movie came out. It was fun to play with ways for people to like Esther and make her more human this time around.”

less! Just ten years old when she began shooting her breakout role as Esther in the 2009 psychological horror film Orphan , Isabelle Fuhrman is now 25 and making her stunning return to the role in Orphan: First Kill . Not that she was remotely in consideration when director William Brent Bell was hired to make this prequel of Jaume Collet-Serra’s thriller about an adopted nine-year-old girl who is not quite as innocent as she appears. Admittedly, some online threats may have had something to do with this unlikely turn of tides… “As soon as we announced the movie, I got death threats,” recalls Bell, “And so I was like, ‘Okay, we have to really pay attention here and make sure we're making a movie that's for the fans, but hopefully also for a new fan base without just treading on the same waters as the original. So it was definitely a lot of pressure, and still is.” The producers of Orphan: First Kill were still
“Isabelle contacted me through Instagram. I didn't know her but she was like, ‘I'm so excited that you guys are doing the movie’,” he tells STACK . Immediately making plans to meet, he recalls, “The first time I met her, she looked amazingly like she did back then, just a little scaled up from when she was a child but with very similar features, hair and proportions and such tiny hands. “She told me, ‘I really want to keep playing this character. It's my character that I created
and I'm really passionate about it.’” Ask Bell if he thought Fuhrman was crazy for imagining she could recreate Esther all these years later, and he replies, “I probably thought more that she had a lot of courage to put a character that she
created on the line and put herself out there like that – and trusted me to do it.

DID YOU KNOW?
Elvis is Baz Lurhmann’s first feature in nine years. His previous film was The Great Gatsby in 2013. Austin Butler caught Baz Luhrmann’s attention with an audition video of him sitting at a piano in his bathrobe singing Unchained Melody to his mother. Butler learned all of his Elvis moves from Rami Malek’s Bohemian Rhapsody movement coach, Polly Bennett. According to Baz Lurhmann, a four-hour cut of the movie exists.

He received that before the film’s official premiere, with Presley, her daughter Lisa Marie and granddaughter Riley Keogh all giving the film their blessing. “This story is about Elvis and Colonel Parker’s relationship… a true story told brilliantly and creatively that only Baz [Luhrmann], in his unique, artistic way, could have delivered… a director who put his heart and soul… into this film,” Presley wrote after attending a private screening prior to the film’s Cannes' unveiling. “Austin Butler is outstanding. Tom Hanks was Col Parker.” Although she omitted DeJonge from her praise, the actress delivers a stellar performance. “Priscilla was such an interesting character to step into,” says DeJonge. “I found her so intriguing, and the fact that they were together for so long, to play those different stages of their life together, was exciting. “I really wanted to strip away all the historical ideals that we placed on these people, to really get through to the human aspect. For me, Priscilla was a woman who really loved this man, and his job takes him away from her all the time. So, how would that make me feel? FROM GLADIATOR TO GOD Thor: Love and Thunder introduces a vainglorious Zeus, the father of all Gods, who spends his days living in excess in the Grand Pantheon in Omnipotence City. In one of the film’s most hilarious moments, Russell Crowe sends up his Gladiator character in his portrayal of the bloated and ineffectual leader, long past his prime and with a Greek accent that seems to be channeling Mark Mitchell’s beloved Con the Fruiterer. Recalling her reaction to Crowe’s gonzo performance, Portman says, “It was so much fun to see Russell Crowe play Zeus and have such a great sense of humour with the character. He has these big, bold aspirations of being a supervillain, and when he first goes to interview to be part of the Vicious 6, he’s just trying to be part of something, but he’s out of his depth. “I think that’s something that a lot of people can identify with. He’s an outsider who just wants to be part of the group. And he’s not getting any of that from the Vicious 6, but that doesn’t kill his spirit to succeed.” In the 12 years since Carell first played Gru, Despicable Me, the Minions and Gru have been a part of his son and daughter’s childhoods. “They’ve followed Gru and the Minions throughout this journey,” he says. “I remember back before Despicable Me , I tested a bunch of different voices on my wife and kids to get their feedback, and the one that I landed on that became the voice of Gru was the one that made them laugh the most. B reaking with a long tradition of introducing a new Doctor at the start of a season, Colin Baker made his debut in the final story of season 21, The Twin Dilemma , first broadcast in March 1984. Sporting a garish costume resembling a candy coloured clown and with a manic and irascible persona far removed from Peter Davison’s mild mannered portrayal, the sixth Doctor’s arrival immediately polarised the show’s legion of fans, leaving them as exasperated as his companion, Peri (Nicola Bryant). While it was far from an auspicious debut, the subsequent season – originally broadcast

adventure featuring the Sontarans and a guest role for Jacqueline Pearce, who played the villainous Servalan in the popular British sci-fi series Blake’s 7 . The much derided Timelash is indeed not one of the best, but still a very traditional Who story that ropes in H.G. Wells, as well as another Blake’s 7 regular, Paul Darrow, whose truly over-the-top performance adds to the cheesy fun. The best is saved for last. Revelation of the Daleks is another all-time classic story featuring the Doctor’s deadliest foes and their creator, Davros, who has taken over the mortuary planet Necros in order to create a new race of Daleks. Ultimately, Colin Baker’s Doctor wasn’t as disagreeable as fans first thought, and Season 22 was a success. But the Doctor was about to face a threat even greater than the Daleks – cancellation! In late February of 1985, the controversial decision to axe Doctor Who after 22 consecutive years on the air was announced, provoking inevitable outrage. BBC1 Controller Michael Grade and Head of Serials Jonathan Powell claimed that the show had become too violent and had lost its appeal – a shallow argument to disguise the fact that the BBC was in financial strife after commissioning 104 episodes of new soap EastEnders and launching a new daytime TV service. Fortunately, following public backlash and an 18-month hiatus, Doctor Who returned for a 23rd season, albeit in a drastically truncated form of only 14 episodes that would comprise the epic adventure The Trial of a Time Lord .

Director Colin Trevorrow considers this his most personal moment in the film, believing it contextualises the final battle more profoundly. “I really feel like I'm there on the ground, 65 million years ago watching these animals existing in their natural habitat. It's a dream I've had forever, to be able to put that on screen,” he explains. "It looks so spectacular in 4K UHD." Other notable new scenes woven into the extended cut include a new western-inspired standoff between Owen and poacher Rainn, Kayla at the Dino Market, an extended chase

She brings a breath of fresh air to the Jurassic universe and has the potential to take the saga into a whole new world. “I appreciate that,” she humbly replies. “I feel like the more people who put that out into the ether, the closer it is to another trilogy becoming a reality. I love playing her and there's a lot more to explore.”
Harding's characterisation in the book, and I was largely inspired by her can-do attitude. She is such the hero of that story, and so much of Kayla is her.” Julianne Moore portrayed Harding in Spielberg's Jurassic Park: The Lost World , and Wise was very aware of the series’ strong female lineage. “In the same way that Ellie Sattler [Laura Dern] has really changed a

Barfly (1987)
P rolific poet and writer Charles Bukowski is an underground cult hero in the mould of William Burroughs and Hunter S. Thompson, whose substance abuse inspired and informed his transgressive prose on skid row life, existential angst, and the social and cultural climate of the city he called home, Los Angeles. But unlike the drug-fuelled work of the former two,
the screenplay in 1979, but it would be eight long years before the film finally arrived. Bukowski initially wanted Sean Penn to play Henry, and the actor agreed on the condition that Dennis Hopper direct the film. But that was never going to happen, as Bukowski considered Hopper to be a "gold-chain wearing Hollywood phony" and had already sealed the deal with Schroeder. Consequently,
alongside J.T. Walsh and Mary McDonnell. Extras include a new audio commentary and interviews. LOLITA (1997) Vladimir Nabokov's controversial 1955 novel – previously filmed by Stanley Kubrick in 1962 – gets a modern makeover from director Adrian Lyne ( Fatal Attraction ), with Jeremy Irons as the schoolteacher who becomes infatuated with his landlady's teenaged daughter. Extras include a new audio commentary and video essay, deleted scenes, featurettes, and more. HAREM (1985) This romantic drama of forbidden love chronicles the unlikely relationship that develops between a sheik (Ben Kingsley) and an American woman (Nastassja Kinski) he has kidnapped to join his harem. A staple of the VHS era, this forgotten flick makes a welcome return on Blu-ray with a new audio commentary and video essay.
Bukowski's poison was alcohol, and his life and exploits are dramatised in director Barbet Schroeder's 1987 film Barfly . Based on a semiautobiographical short story by Bukowski, who adapted it into the screenplay for the film, Barfly casts Mickey Rourke as the
Mickey Rourke was cast and, depending on
which account you believe, Bukowski considered his performance to be "misdone" or "a good acting job". Imprint's limited two-disc edition of Barfly includes an audio commentary with Schroeder,
seedy Henry Chinaski, a slovenly writer whose creativity is predicated on his levels of inebriation. Henry regularly clashes with the bartender (Frank Stallone) at his local dive, leaving him battered and bruised, and becomes enamoured by fellow drunkard Willa Wilcox (Faye Dunaway). But when a wealthy publisher (Alice Krige) also takes an interest in him and his work, it complicates his relationship with Willa – and the bottle. The kind of movie that makes you want to take a long hot shower afterwards, Barfly will polarise viewers and delight fans attuned to Bukowski's world view. Schroeder commissioned Bukowski to write
and new interviews with Alice Krige, Frank Stallone, editor Eva Gardos, and production designer Bob Ziembicki. Bukowski fans are well catered for with a bonus disc featuring the 1985 documentary The Charles Bukowski Tapes , a compilation of 52 short interviews with the man himself, conducted by Barbet Schroeder over three years in the lead-up to production commencing on Barfly . Over a four-hour running time, the chain-smoking and beer-swilling Bukowski talks frankly about bars, humanity, and his contempt for modern life, and these vignettes are, predictably, as colourful and opinionated as his prose.

MONTY PYTHON’S THE MEANING OF LIFE I n 1983, one of the greatest movies of all time was DISC OF THE MONTH
you accept just one little wafer thin after-dinner mint after a rather sizeable repast? Now all the craziness of this quest for knowledge has had its original film negative plucked from the bosom of storage in order to give it a full 4K restoration, which comes to us neatly pressed onto a 4K Ultra HD disc, with HDR doing its boosting thing to the darker and lighter elements so that it will look quite splendid. Sound, too, will be rather nice, with a new DTS:X multi dimensional audio track having
released. That movie was Scarface , but we’re talking about something completely different here. By this time, comedy collective Monty Python had released two original movies in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian, plus two others – And Now for Something Completely Different , which was just a collection of clips from the TV series, and Live at the Hollywood Bowl , which was much the same, but done live. Rather than taking on another historical epic, the Python crew – Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin – went bigger and bolder and tackled the subject of life itself, in what was rather aptly titled The Meaning of Life . What’s it all about? What does religion have to do with it? Why does the machine go “Ping”? Should
