On the other side of the coin, Ken loves seeing classic vinyl sought out by younger listeners. “Your twenty-somethings or your teenagers even, they’ll get excited about Nirvana or Pearl Jam or Chili Peppers," he says. "But even going further back to mainstream albums like Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, and the Beatles. You get 19-year- olds who are excited about buying Abbey Road or The White Album .” Ken’s a self-described “Beatles freak”, and began his massive vinyl collection with a very special 7-inch single. “I requested (and

received) The Beatles’ A Hard Day's Night for my fifth birthday,” he says, “and that 45 is now in a frame on the wall of my music room at home.” His collection spans all kinds of genres from the ‘60s onwards, and Ken cites Teenage Fanclub’s Howdy! (reissued a few years ago) as one of his favourites. “I have a sentimental attachment to that one because it came out when my Mrs and I first got together,” he says, adding that the Scottish group “tick all the boxes for [him].” He still adds new releases to

culture. “I think a lot of our younger customers are feeling this as well: they hear the latest things, and they don’t want to just stream it.” He cites Spacey Jane and DMA’s as two Aussie alternative groups whose vinyl has done exceptionally well recently, as well as Harry Styles. “It always seems there’s one boy from the boy bands that turns out to be the talent, and he's the one from One Direction,” Ken laughs. “I think both of his albums have been really good pop albums; he’s taking a few chances, he has crossed over a bit, even to older listeners.”

his collection – the latest being The Beths’ Jump Rope Gazers , which is his favourite LP of the year so far – and coming up he’s pumped for the new Elvis Costello (“that could be interesting”), and one local legend. “I must admit, I do have a very soft spot for Kylie,” he says. “Her new one’s due out on the 6th of November, and it’s called Disco , and if anyone can do a good disco album these days I reckon it’s Kylie. She’s always had style, Kylie. Hopefully that will be a good one for Christmas.”
