Come to Daddy marks the directorial debut of cult-film producer Ant Timpson, whose credits on The Greasy Strangler , Deathgasm and Turbo Kid have etched his name on the wall of the horror hall of fame. Elijah Wood delivers a quirky performance as a musician who returns home at the bequest of his estranged father. What transpires is a weekend of unexpected twists and turns, of which we will say no more. Timpson has crafted a unique and original horror film with vibrant production values and an atmospheric score. Fans of movies like Mandy and Daniel Isn't Real will relish the violent kookiness of this truly effective chiller. BS

Teenager Stan (played by Vance Joy lookalike Jay Jay Warren) must contend with school bullies and an abusive grandpa. When he discovers a vampire has taken up residence in the shed on his grandfather's rural property, his equally bullied buddy Dommer (Cody Kostro) sees it as a solution to their problems, suggesting they feed their tormentors to the creature... A cool indie flick with plenty of bite and some top notch makeup effects, The Shed is a throwback to '80s horror flicks like Fright Night and the Creepshow segment 'The Crate'.

Co-written and directed by Patrick Lussier, who gave us the My Bloody Valentine remake and Nic Cage guilty pleasure Drive Angry , Trick is a Halloween-set (obvs) slasher flick in which a seemingly indestructible masked killer returns every October 31 to rack up a sizeable body count. No, it's not Michael Myers but rather a college student named Patrick "Trick" Weaver, who flipped out during a game of spin-the- knife at a Halloween party and slaughtered his fellow players. Omar Epps plays the detective who shot him five times, and is now obsessed with the killer's annual return. Add genre great Tom Atkins ( The Fog ) into the mix and the result is a treat for horror fans. BS

Jayne Lyons' children's book is brought to life as a delightful, homegrown animated adventure from Sydney-based Flying Bark Productions ( Blinky Bill ). 14-year- old Freddy Lupin (voiced by Illia Swindells) is part of a benevolent pack of werewolves and its would-be leader, following the death of his dad. But when the time comes for Freddy to change into his wolfy form for the first time, the transformation leaves him resembling a pampered poodle. Featuring a strong supporting voice cast including Jai Courtney, Samara Weaving and Rhys Darby, this is a cute kids' flick with a positive message about accepting who you are. AC

And it succeeds in making vampires scary again. AC
