Feb 2, 1973 Keith Emerson – pianist with prog-rock nutbags Emerson Lake and Palmer – suffers burns to his hands, when his piano explodes earlier than pyrotechnic stunt-riggers had planned during a show in San Francisco. He makes a full recovery.
feb 14, 1977 Grammy Award-winning US singer-songwriter Janis Ian receives 461 Valentine's day cards, in response to the lyrics of her song At Seventeen – which won a Grammy for Best Female Vocal Pop Performance, plus noms in the Record and Song of the Year categories – which lament “the valentines [she] never knew”. feb 16, 1991 The Simpsons hit #1 on the UK singles chart with Do The Bartman , which was written by Bryan Loren. The Simpsons mega- fan Michael Jackson contributes some of the lyrics, and provides backing vocals. Loren spends the rest of his days insisting that Jackson did not write, or co-write, his song. feb 19, 2004 Johnny Cash's family stymie an attempt by advertisers to use the track Ring of Fire in haemorrhoid medication advertisements. Cash's daughter Rosanne said that she and her family "would never allow the song to be demeaned like that." feb 20, 1982 Ozzy Osbourne is arrested in Texas for urinating on the Alamo Centaph, a monument which honours soldiers who fought in the Texas Revolution. He was wearing a dress at the time because his wife Sharon had hidden all his clothes in an attempt to prevent him from leaving the house. Osbourne was banned from playing in San Antonio ever again – but the restriction was lifted in 1992.
feb 25, 2006 A concerned passer-by spots George Michael slumped over inside a car in Hyde Park, London. The citizen calls police, who arrest Michael on suspicion of possessing drugs; they release the musician on bail. Michael makes a statement about the incident, saying: "I was in possession of class C drugs which is an offense and I have no complaints about the police who were professional throughout… It was my own stupid fault, as usual." feb 27, 1993 Whitney Houston claims the record for longest ever #1 on the US singles chart – snatching victory from Boyz II Men’s End Of The Road – with her Dolly Parton-penned track I Will Always Love You . feb 28, 1970 Eva Von Zeppelin – a relative of the airship designer – threatens to sue rock band Led Zeppelin if they perform under the family name in Denmark. The band end up playing their Copenhagen show as ‘The Nobs’. feb 29, 2004 Eight years after Mysterious Girl reaches #2 on the UK singles chart, Peter Andre re-releases the track after his relevancy gets a boost via his appearance on UK reality show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here . This time around, it makes it to #1.
feb 5, 2016 A new species of black tarantula is named after musician Johnny Cash, after it’s discovered near the Californian penitentiary at which Cash recorded
his live album At Folsom Prison . The critter's full Latin title is Aphonopelma johnnycashi.
feb 6, 2008 A Los Angeles judge issues a restraining order against Britney Spears' manager Sam Lufti, after reading a six-page declaration from Spears’ mother Lynne which attests that Lufti "moved into Britney's home and has purported to take control of her life, home and finances"..
feb 10, 1971 Carole King releases her second studio album Tapestry , to massive critical acclaim – it remains one of the best- selling albums of all
time. The cover art features singer-songwriter King sitting in her own loungeroom holding a needlepoint piece she’d made herself, with her cat Telemachus sitting in the foreground. feb 13, 2012 Adele wins every one of the six categories in which she’s nominated at the Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Record of the Year.
