Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark isn’t an anthology film like Creepshow , but rather integrates the spooky tales – taken from the ’80s children’s books by Alvin Schwartz – into the main narrative, which involves a group of teen outcasts who discover the titular tome in a haunted mansion and are subsequently haunted by their deepest fears. This is a horror flick for youngsters that are too old for Goosebumps but still too young for IT . The setting is 1968, but the scary-but-safe tone recalls
a lot of exhilarating racing footage then you’ll be pleased, but the movie is much more than just that. It’s the sort of human underdog story that will appeal to even the least petrol-headed of viewers. AF
