in October 1996, Australian alternative music was riding a creative wave. Grunge had shaken up the music world, Triple J was becoming a tastemaker, and a generation of local bands were proving they could stand alongside international acts. Into that environment came an album that was loud, playful, unpredictable, and unmistakably Australian. Formed in the Riverina town of Finley, NSW, Spiderbait had already built a devoted following through relentless touring and a pair of acclaimed albums. Their mix of punk, alternative rock, pop hooks, and offbeat humour made them difficult to categorise, but easy to love. By the time work began on their third album, the trio of Kram, Janet English, and Damian Whitty had developed a chemistry that few bands could match. Recorded between Sydney’s Studios 301 and Rockinghorse Studios near Byron Bay, Ivy and the Big Apples captured Spiderbait at exactly the right moment. Producers Phil McKellar and Paul McKercher helped sharpen the band’s songwriting while preserving the raw energy that had earned them a loyal audience. The result was an album that could shift effortlessly from noisy garage rock to melodic pop and back again. The record’s breakout moment arrived with Buy Me a Pony . Driven by one of the most recognisable riffs in Australian rock, the single became the first Australian song to top Triple J’s Hottest 100. It was a landmark achievement that announced Spiderbait as one of the country’s biggest bands. Follow-up singles, including Calypso and Hot Water & Milk, only strengthened the album’s reputation.

The anniversary edition celebrates one of the defining Australian albums of the 1990s, featuring classics including Buy Me a Pony, Calypso, Hot Water & Milk, and Jesus . For long-time fans it’s a chance to revisit a landmark record, while newcomers can discover the album that helped redefine Australian alternative music and cement Spiderbait’s place in local rock history.

Buy Me a Pony became the first Australian song to finish at No. 1 in Triple J’s Hottest 100. The album title was inspired by a local Finley woman named Ivy who sold oversized apples. Calypso reached an international

audience after appearing in the teen classic 10 Things I Hate About You . Ivy and the Big Apples won the 1997 ARIA Award for ‘Best Alternative Release’.

Commercial success soon followed. Ivy and the Big Apples reached No. 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart, achieved double platinum sales, and won the 1997 ARIA Award for ‘Best Alternative Release’. More importantly, it showcased a band entirely comfortable being themselves. Whether delivering infectious pop melodies, punk

fuelled chaos, or tongue-in-cheek humour, Spiderbait never sounded like they were following trends. Nearly three decades later, the album remains a defining release of the Australian alternative rock boom. Its songs continue to receive regular airplay, while new generations of listeners discover the record’s infectious energy.

FROM FINLEY WITH NOISE Spiderbait’s story began in the small town of Finley, where drummer and vocalist Mark “Kram” Maher, bassist and vocalist Janet English, and guitarist Damian Whitty formed a band built on friendship and a shared love of loud music. Remarkably, the trio has remained intact throughout its career. Their relentless touring schedule and strong support from Triple J helped build a national following during the early ‘90s. By the time Ivy and the Big Apples arrived, Spiderbait had already become one of Australia’s most exciting live acts. The album transformed them from underground favourites into household names.
