Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park. It was the first CD I ever had and the rap/rock fusion blew my mind. I have so many memories of the band and this timeless record set the benchmark for nu metal sound. Do you have a vinyl collection? If so, how did it begin, and expand? I do! At the time of writing this, I have around 70 records but no player (I’m a collector, OK?!). It began from working at JB, of course, and seeing all the cool limited releases we get. The capability to import music is how it became a slippery slope. What do you enjoy most about working in music at JB? Discovering new artists and discussing shared passions with other team members and likeminded customers.

One year, I saw this CD on the shelf: it had a grey cover with a maroon soldier on the front. I put the headphones on and listened to In the End by Linkin Park. The album was Hybrid Theory and the year was 2000. I’m not sure what exactly I identified within this record, having had a relatively lovely life growing up on a farm in rural NSW, but at seven years old, something in it spoke to me. I think I bought it for $20, which I must have saved from mowing lawns, and it lived in my Discman for many years after. In 2017, I covered In the End for Triple J’s Like a Version. Tragically, it was shortly after the passing of Chester Bennington.
