Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Raiders of the Lost Ark was a tough act to follow, as Steven Spielberg discovered when making Temple of Doom in 1984. To sidestep repeated Nazi themes, George Lucas opted to make it a prequel, setting the story one year before Raiders .
