Following up a global phenomenon like Game of Thrones was always going to be a big ask, but fortunately spin-off series House of the Dragon took on the challenge with gusto and delivered a debut season that was every bit as complex and epic in scope. Drawing from author George R.R. Martin’s hefty book Fire and Blood , which chronicles the downfall of the warring House Targaryen some 200 years prior to the events of Thrones , House of the Dragon has enough material to fuel the series for many seasons to come – and, more importantly, it turns the rather stuffy source (written in the style of a historical document) into gripping viewing. The first season set up the events that will ultimately lead to the Targaryen civil war known as the ‘Dance of Dragons’, and season two raises the stakes even higher following the cliffhanger killing of Queen Rhaenyra’s son. Strategies are devised, armies are on the march, battle lines are drawn, and new dragon riders must be rallied. The second season also doubles down on the scheming, politicking, and wonderful dialogue that’s integral to both shows, and isn’t afraid to mercilessly dispatch key characters unexpectedly. Fans can also look forward to an epic dragon battle sequence that brings the fire and blood. The success of House of the Dragon is also a result of some quality casting, including Matt Smith as the morally bankrupt Prince Daemon Targaryen, and this issue

we catch up with the former Doctor Who to discuss his character. Let the Dance of Dragons begin… Paul Jones, Editor-in-Chief
