2025 TOMORROW'S TECH TODAY
Words Scott Hocking & Amy Flower
If you want the lowdown on all the innovative, game-changing, and just plain strange technological advances that are on the horizon, the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is where it’s at! The biggest event on the tech calendar brings the global giants and budding start ups together in Las Vegas to show off their
latest wares, from consumer tech and AI advancements to predicting forthcoming trends. While not everything on display at CES 2025 will be available in Australia, we’ve rounded up some major announcements along with the weird and wonderful tech that caught our eye.
NVIDIA unleashes game changing new GPUs
One of the biggest CES 2025 reveals saw NVIDIA announce its next generation GeForce RTX 50 series of GPUs, which promise stunning visual realism and twice the performance of the RTX 40 series. These come via breakthroughs in AI driven rendering such as neural shaders, digital human technologies, geometry, and lighting. More detail, less ghosting – what’s not to like?
It’s made possible by harnessing the power of AI with NVIDIA's Blackwell AI engine technology that features their fourth iteration of DLSS – Deep Learning Super Sampling. NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang claims this is “the most significant graphics innovation since we introduced programmable shading 25 years ago.” The selection features four new GPUs, ranging from the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti up to the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090, and they’re set for release from late January into February. The upshot of all this incredible new processing power is better graphics performance for everybody. While gaming may be the obvious winner, those in productivity who deal with large graphics processes will also be champing at the bit to get a hold of this latest technology to speed their workflow. The latest NVIDIA GPUs are set to feature in new desktop models from various PC manufacturers, as well as laptops – which will be able to enjoy performance equal to desktops, and improved battery life of up to 40% - from as early as March this year. AF
being unleashed, the top-of-the-line GeForce RTX 5090 GPU features an astonishing 92 billion transistors, which provide over 3,352 trillion (!) AI operations per second (TOPS) of computing punch.
