# 1 MY FIRST ALBUM

143 by Katy Perry. Originally panned by critics and the public alike (myself included), 143 really becomes fun after a few listens. All My Love is one of her catchiest songs in years and Gorgeous feat. Kim Petras has some real staying power. It’s my favourite gym album right now and Lifetimes goes hard when I’m pushing for that last rep. What’s your all-time favourite album and why? Kesha - Rainbow . After a five-year hiatus

Indooroopilly Shoppingtown in the late ’70s. The Beatles, along with Bob Dylan, made up the vast majority of the music played at the McCormack family home in Tarbet Street, Kenmore. My dad had most of the albums, but Yellow Submarine was absent. I’d seen the movie and it made sense to spend my hard earned $8.99 on this missing piece. I learned a valuable lesson – do some research before you buy. Released in 1969, Yellow Submarine is often considered the Beatles’ weakest album due to its disjointed and uneven nature. The soundtrack format, featuring only four new Beatles songs alongside orchestral score compositions by George Martin, disrupts the cohesive flow. Additionally, the songs, while individually pleasant, lack the depth and innovation that define the Beatles’ best work. Anyway, I do distinctly remember the smell of the vinyl when I first opened the album. I still have it, but I’ve not played it in decades. Maybe I will tonight? DAVID McCORMACK

marred with legal battles and public disputes, Rainbow is Kesha’s most raw, introspective and

downright fun album. Let ‘Em Talk is my go-to song whenever I’m down, it’s impossible for it not to lift your spirits, and Praying captures Kesha’s pure vocal technique that was missing in some of her earlier “party” albums. The album showcases her ability as a pop vocalist and songwriter, all while maintaining the wit and fun her first two albums are so well known for. Do you have a vinyl collection? If so, how did it begin, and expand? Although no personal vinyl collection, my dad was a DJ and when I was growing up I always remember his thousands (literally) of vinyls taking up space in the garage. He eventually had to move them all to my grandparents’ spare bedroom because it kept growing. I remember from the age of five, every Sunday we used to visit my grandparents and on the way there we played “Name That Tune” on the car radio and when we arrived I’d go through the maze of vinyl from the spare bedroom and listen to it on my grandfather’s turntable. Eventually my dad transitioned to CDs, but his vinyl collection from the ‘70s/’80s/’90s gave me so many fond memories. What do you enjoy most about working in music at JB? Getting to see all the amazing new releases and the work that goes in to making them pop in stores.

What’s an early, cherished music memory? Back in the UK when I was a kid, my dad used to buy every single Now! CD (our version of So Fresh) and we used to play “Guess That Tune” for hours on long roadtrips. They’re some of my favourite memories of him and Its turned out a great asset for the music rounds at trivia now that I’m an adult. Which recent album do you currently have on repeat?
