Whether you’re on the hunt for new ear gear, a portable Bluetooth speaker, a soundbar for your TV, or a quality turntable, this quick guide to shopping for audio tech has you sorted for sound! Words Bec Summer SOUND CHECK EAR GEAR
Hands-free calling: Leave your phone in your pocket! Headphones and buds with inbuilt microphones allow you to answer calls directly from them with a tap or swipe.
HEADPHONES & EARBUDS If you haven’t upgraded your headphones or earbuds in a long time, you’ll discover all sorts of cool features packed into modern cans and buds, such as noise cancelling, voice assistant support, hands-free calling, touch controls, EQ personalisation, spatial audio support, and more.
What to consider: Wireless or wired headphones? Wireless Bluetooth headphones provide more freedom, while some audiophiles argue that a wired connection delivers the best sound quality. Some modern headphones offer hybrid connection – wireless plus a cable and jack for the best of both worlds. True wireless or wired earbuds? True wireless earbuds have no internal and external cables and connect using Bluetooth. Wired earbuds connect to devices via a physical cable – generally a headphone jack or USB-C. There’s no battery to charge, and they can hang around your neck when not in use. Comfort: Headphones with a cushioned headband and earcups that fit snugly and comfortably are the way to go. Earbuds have soft silicone tips that create a sonic seal, and many buds can include different sizes to suit all ear types.
Noise cancelling: Active or adaptive noise cancelling (ANC) is a must for silencing a
noisy commute or gym session, and the drone of a long haul flight. ’Aware’ modes let you adjust the level of audible ambient noise.
Multipoint: Connect your ear gear to two devices simultaneously, such as a phone and a laptop, and easily switch between them without disconnecting and re-pairing. Battery life : This depends on personal usage. You’ll generally get all-day playback, however regular use of ANC can reduce battery life. Earbuds have the advantage of storing multiple charges in their carry case, so there’s always a quick top-up in reserve. Durability: Ear gear should be protected from raindrops, splashes, or a sweaty workout. Look for a high IPX or IP rating, which indicates how well it withstands water and dust (see page 8).
Spatial audio support: Creates a more immersive, 3D sound experience with simulated surround that adjusts to follow your head movements – just like being at a live gig! Controls: Most modern ear gear has simple touch/swipe/tap controls for volume, skipping tracks, and enabling ANC. There are also models with dedicated buttons should you prefer tactile controls.
