TRIPLE THE TERROR
It's Halloween this month, and that means horror movies. JB Hi-Fi have treats in store with a BUY 2 GET 1 FREE promotion that includes some of the genre's greatest hits on DVD and Blu-ray. So why not mix and match those bona fide classics with some undiscovered gems you may have missed, like these fear-filled flicks...
DRAG ME TO HELL A gypsy curse turns a young bank worker's life into a living hell in Sam Raimi's triumphant return to horror. A gleefully scary slapstick shocker driven by the same irreverence that distinguished his Evil Dead trilogy, Drag Me to Hell is so enjoyably over the top, you won't know whether to laugh or scream. One of the best horror films of the last decade. SSSSSSS "Don't say it, hiss it" was the tagline for this onomatopoeic creature feature from 1973. It's a mad scientist tale in which herpetologist Strother Martin attempts to turn his young lab assistant (Dirk Benedict) into, you guessed it, a snake. A King Cobra to be exact. The fact that all of the venomous reptiles used in the film are the real thing adds to the creep factor. THE WITCH "Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?" One of the best horror films of 2016 follows a Puritan family's domestic disintegration after they are banished from their village to a remote farm on the edge of a sinister forest. A palpable sense of dread radiates from every frame in this authentic, olde worlde nightmare. And its resident goat, Black Phillip, has since become a cult figure. THE CABIN IN THE WOODS A bunch of teen stereotypes on a weekend retreat to the title location end up running for their lives when an ancient evil is unleashed. If you've think you've seen this all before, you ain't seen nothing yet! Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's smart and self-aware love letter to the genre is a true original. And it's got Chris Hemsworth, too. An absolute must-have.
IT FOLLOWS Following a one night stand, teenager Maika Monroe is relentlessly pursued by a malevolent shapeshifting entity in an ingenious riff on the body snatching theme. Transforming adolescent fears into a new kind of boogeyman, David Robert Mitchell's film plays like an arthouse A Nightmare on Elm Street , with nods to John Carpenter and David Cronenberg. BONE TOMAHAWK The Searchers meets The Hills Have Eyes with a stomach-churning dose of Cannibal Holocaust thrown in for good measure. Horror westerns are a rarity, especially good ones, but this brutal, bone-crunching debut feature from writer- director S. Craig Zahler is an example of how to successfully blend the two. Dare you take the five-day ride into the Valley of the Starving Man? CRIMSON PEAK Jane Eyre goes to hell in Guillermo del Toro's ravishing fusion of gothic melodrama, romance, and haunted house horrors. Mia Wasikowska discovers new beau Tom Hiddleston has some sinister skeletons in the family closet when she moves into his decaying mansion, located atop a mine that oozes scarlet clay. When it comes to horror, few do it as well as del Toro. KRAMPUS It might be a Christmas-themed scarefest, but why not grab this right now as an early present. Evoking the festive mayhem of Gremlins and the tone of Tim Burton, this is a cautionary tale of what can be unleashed when a little boy loses belief in the Christmas spirit. An underrated creature feature with a memorable monster, evil elves and demonic toys. What's not to like?
