4K UHD BEST-SELLERS for SEPTEMBER 2019

DISCS OF THE MONTH ANT-MAN, DOCTOR STRANGE, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY At last count the Marvel Cinematic Universe boasted 23 movies. That’s a lot of super-heroic viewing, but those collecting them on 4K Ultra HD have been missing three key back catalogue titles – until this month. From smallest to biggest (physically), we start with Ant-Man . While the sequel’s already out and about, we now get to enjoy the power of HDR vision and Dolby Atmos sound in the origin tale of Paul Rudd’s superbug. Fitting into the timeline between Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War , it’s not only a good time, it’s also one of the more kid-friendly MCU titles – and that’s not just because of Thomas the Tank Engine! If you prefer things a bit more real life – well, exaggerated real life – then Zombieland should definitely be on your shopping list, along with Watchmen and Terminator: Salvation . Ridley Scott’s American Gangster is also set to hit, as is Alan Parker’s much-loved Angel Heart . Fans of classic cinema will also be delighted to pick up Frank Capra’s bona fide 1946 classic – and perfect Christmas watch - It’s a Wonderful Life . COMING SOON

Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange pops up next, in the tale of a brilliant neurosurgeon who takes a detour into the world of mysticism after a major car accident. Again, with HDR and Dolby Atmos, this one – which fits between Spider- Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok – should polish up a treat on the 4K format. Finally, it’s time to get into those ‘70s mixtapes again as the first adventure of the Guardians of the Galaxy arrives to rock our 4K worlds. You guessed it: HDR and Dolby Atmos, so those classic tunes are sure to sound “I am Groot” hot! Out Oct 2

ALSO OUT THIS MONTH

HELLBOY (2004) He may have had a rather higgledy-piggledy trip to 4K Ultra HD with the sequel to this one and the recent reboot coming first, but now the horny red dude is set to celebrate the 15th anniversary of his first big movie with its arrival on the format. Starring Ron Perlman as ‘Big Red’, with top support from Selma Blair and Doug Jones, director Guillermo del Toro’s visual trip is set to light up our screens with HDR-enhanced, native 4K vision and a screaming new Dolby Atmos audio mix. Plus, we get both the theatrical and director’s cuts of the flick – and they already had us at “HDR”. Out Oct 16

MALEFICENT Disney’s live action spin on the classic Sleeping Beauty fairy tale sees Angelina Jolie vamping it up deliciously as the titular character. This is the story of how she went from a peaceful fairy guardian of the forest to the black-clad mistress of all things vengeance, after having her heart shattered by a human. But is she now truly black of heart, or is there a spark of good left in there somewhere? Maleficent ’s gorgeous visuals are set to polish up a treat here, with HDR enhancement casting its spell. Coupled with a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack, this is sure to be another magical Disney 4K Ultra HD experience. Out Oct 2

DID YOU MISS?

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 - PARABELLUM The massive third entry in the action movie series about a man and his dog – and the consequences of crossing those in the remarkably code-abiding criminal underworld – smashed onto 4K Ultra HD as loudly as it did when it hit cinema screens, and in an R-rated version to boot! An absolutely thumping Dolby Atmos mix accompanies

THE CORNETTO TRILOGY

This triple whammy from director Edgar Wright with stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, nicknamed after a dodgy attempt to score free ice creams, introduced us variously to the “rom-zom-com”, a twisted buddy cop flick, and an absolutely epic pub

luscious Dolby Vision-enhanced visuals that bring out the beautifully-shot world of Wick and his many adversaries. Sure, there may not be a lot to the story, but if you’re after wild action – and can’t resist the prospect of a full-on horseback chase through New York City – then this is a hard one to pass up.

crawl with added alien bodysnatching. Even if you’re not into all three of the flicks it doesn’t matter, as Shaun of the Dead , Hot Fuzz and The World’s End have all been released on 4K Ultra HD separately, all with HDR enhancement in the visual department, and all with brand spanking new DTS:X sound mixes. Oh, and dogs CAN look up…!
