HALLOWEEN (1978) The original and the best! One of the most successful independent films of all time, John Carpenter's seminal slasher film is a masterfully crafted exercise in terror and suspense that's genuinely scary. Originally titled 'The Babysitter Murders', Halloween introduced future scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis and turned masked maniac Michael Myers into a horror icon. THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE (1974) A summer road trip into the blistering Texas landscape turns into a nightmare for a group of youngsters when they stumble upon a charnel house of cannibal killers. Tobe Hooper’s horror masterpiece left an indelible imprint on the genre. Low on gore despite the title, it’s what it does with your head that you’ll never forget – a film designed to drive you out of your mind. THE VOID A police officer rescues an injured man from the side of a country road and subsequently finds himself trapped in a hospital of horrors in this ambitious Canadian shocker. Combining the cosmic dread of H.P. Lovecraft with the slimy transformations of The Thing , and loaded with gruesome practical effects, fans of '80s horror will appreciate this one's old school approach. THE DESCENT A group of female friends exploring a cave system in the Appalachian mountains find themselves trapped and hunted by monstrous subterranean predators. British director Neil Marshall's claustrophobic and unbearably tense nail-biter is an example of the genre at its finest. Turn out the lights, crank up the volume, and prepare to be seriously scared.

THE EVIL DEAD The ultimate cabin-in-the-woods horror movie, Sam Raimi's berserk cult classic was a rite- of-passage film for teens back in 1981. This jaw-dropping low budget masterpiece set a new benchmark for screen splatter, turned star Bruce Campbell into a cult icon, established Raimi as a master of horror, and spawned two sequels and an equally outrageous television series. THE HILLS HAVE EYES 1 & 2 (2006-07) This update of the 1977 Wes Craven classic is one of those rare horror remakes that’s actually worth your time. The story remains the same – suburban American family runs afoul of a mutant cannibal clan in the desert – and the gruelling set pieces are faithfully and brutally restaged. In the equally grisly sequel, a group of National Guardsmen find themselves trapped in hillbilly hell. CARRIE (1976) Brian De Palma’s brilliant adaptation of Stephen King’s first novel is an affecting revenge tale involving a tormented teenager with telekinetic powers. Carrie launched the career of Sissy Spacek and established De Palma as a major Hollywood player. Kudos, too, to Piper Laurie as Carrie’s unhinged mama. It also has one of the best jump scares in horror film history. INSIDIOUS Aussie filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell followed up Saw with this creepy and atmospheric haunted house frightener. Only this time it isn't the house that's haunted – it's a comatose child who's the magnet for the paranormal activity. Taking its cues from Poltergeist , this old school scarefest delivers a number of effective jolts. Don't watch it alone!
