Soundgarden, Pearl Jam – that’s my scene,” she says. “But I love, love, love, soulful women too: Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, Sharon Jones.” She’s gearing up for a big December of live music including The Weeknd and Paul McCartney, and recently got out to see Tex Don & Charlie and the “incredible” Midnight Oil. When it comes to live performances she appreciates those bands that meaningfully connect with the crowd – like Foo Fighters. “I’ve seen them live several times – I love Dave Grohl,” she smiles. “They’re a band where you can just see that they love what they do, and they show it, and they give 110 per cent.”

CathyWaters at JB Hi-Fi Loganholme, QLD

H aving worked in music retail since the ‘80s, Cathy Waters has seen the innards and been at the heart of more than a few record stores – including the first ever JB Hi-Fi to open in Queensland in 2001, in Capalaba. But she’s particularly fond of Loganholme JB, because it has a distinctly classic air about it. “It’s like the original store that I started at back in the day!” she chuckles. “We have a great vinyl section here, and it’s got its own little alcove. It adds to the atmosphere here. We have a lot of old school collectors that like to come in and get your

collectables and picture discs.” Aside from the daily struggle of keeping enough Ed and Adele on the shelves, Loganholme caters to all stripes: “The metalheads’ll come in and get Iron Maiden and your old school Black Sabbath; your punk kids’ll come in for The Smith Street Band – and a lot of Australian bands, like Sticky Fingers. We’re predominantly a metal and punk store, but we have a good cross- section of stuff for everybody.” Cathy herself has eclectic tastes but is primarily about blues, rock, and funk. “I’m a massive Gary Clark Jr. fan, and Stone Temple Pilots,
