I learned about The Tragically Hip from a Canadian writer I met while working for a Melbourne street press years ago. He sent me the group's 1991 album Road Apples (it’s a colloquial term for the rural phenomenon of horse sh-t on the road) and said “Thank me later” with atypical self-satisfaction. I thought “Oh, they’re the most popular Canadian band in Canada? I probably won’t dig them.” But I did dig them. And then I realised that you could consider their Australian equivalent in our own Midnight Oil. The devoted fans of both have adopted similar truncated nicknames for the bands (“the Hip”, “the Oils”). Both write smart rock music which addresses homeland affairs. Both are

captained by charismatic, activist frontmen who care deeply about the environment and their country’s often-maligned Indigenous population, and are heavily involved in charity campaigns and philanthropy to address critical issues. Both are Members of the Orders of their respective countries. So with the thought in mind that we remain blessed with Peter Garrett and Midnight Oil – you may even get to see them live this month – we extend our condolences to our Commonwealth buds on the loss of the Hip's iconic frontman Gord Downie (1964 - 2017). Rest in peace and rock on. Zo ë Radas (Music Editor)
