Fast & Furious 7 (2015) Dom and crew vs Deckard Shaw There’s just something about Dom that pees people off, with this one having a certain “Didn’t you render my brother comatose?” air. Yes, former British Special Forces officer Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) is out to avenge his brother’s hospitalisation at the hands of Toretto and his crew, and goes to great lengths – and clocks up several frequent flyer miles – to do so. Their beef comes to a head atop a parking garage, but this disagreement is on foot, rather than on wheels. This is also where the hostility between Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw kicked off… FORCED INDUCTION Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw are assigned to work together after Shaw’s sister, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), injects herself with a super-virus in order to stop it from falling into the wrong hands. With their past history, and very different ways of operating, more agro sparks fly between Messrs Hobbs and Shaw than those from under a tuner’s pride and joy on a Melbourne road. Fast & Furious 6 (2013) Dom and crew vs Owen Shaw With the promise of an amnesty that will allow he and his crew to return to the US without all that pesky getting arrested and stuff, Dom makes a deal with DSS agent Luke Hobbs to help capture ex-SAS Major Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), who’s just taken out a Russian military convoy. Speaking of which, a later scene involving yet more army hardware delivers one of several cool shows of strength between our two factions here, as Dom and crew hit the Spanish highways and face taking out Shaw – who’s now trundling along in a tank. OK, so it’s not really a rivalry as such, but as one of the absolute greatest scenes in the history of the franchise, we had to find a way to jam it in here somewhere. Take Dom’s crew, one massive 4,000-kilogram bank vault, a heavily-fortified Terradyne Gurkha SUV and two Dodge Charger SRTs (all black, of course) and add some rather sturdy cables. Oh yeah, plop them in the busy streets of Rio de Janeiro and, well, watch the sparks fly – literally! Fast & Furious 5 (2011) Dom and crew vs a bank vault

IN THE SHADOW OF THE HOON

When the wheels first spun on The Fast & the Furious , nobody suspected that it would become one of the most successful action franchises of all time. As we now await the ninth main instalment, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham star this month in action-stuffed spin-off Hobbs & Shaw .Theirs is far from the only rivalry that we’ve seen in the series so far though – here’s a fast five of our faves… Words Amy Flower

The Fast and the Furious (2001) Brian O'Connor vs Dom Toretto Ground zero for the franchise saw LAPD officer Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) sent into the world of illegal street racing undercover. He has his pick of the impound cars and rocks up to his first meet in a Kermit green Mitsubishi Eclipse, which he uses as collateral in a race against Mazda RX-7 driving Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), who’s basically the big cheese of the LA street racer world. After Brian loses, his car gets destroyed before delivery to Toretto, so Bri’s left owing him a car. They bond over a Toyota Supra though…

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) Sean Boswell vs Takashi Lacking familiar franchise faces, the series creators decided that Japan needed to get both fast and furious, with this venture into the world of drifting. Speedy young American Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) is sent to Tokyo to live with his US Navy officer father, both to get some discipline and to avoid being sent to prison. It isn’t long before his revhead ways come back to the fore, however, as he slides into the world of drifting, and soon “Drift King” Takashi (Brian Tee) has a beef with Sean. After all, he dared to speak to the Yakuza-connected dude’s girlfriend! Cue some hot Mustang on 350Z action.
