H i there STACK music lovers! It’s Oz Music Month, and that means Australian awards season; we’ve already seen Courtney Barnett sweep the Carlton Dry AIR Awards, held at the amazing, heritage-listed Meat Market in Melbourne and hosted by Dylan Lewis . Barnett sadly wasn’t in attendance due to her current touring schedule, but we were treated to several typically softly-spoken video clips she’d recorded in thanks for each award. Live performances included Brisbane’s sweetheart Airling , up-and-coming rockers Bad//Dreems , and a surprise rendition of Better Than from old mate John Butler . Flight Facilities triumphed in the Dance/Electronica category, #1 Dads were awarded Breakthrough Independent Artist, and Melbourne’s psychedelic King Gizzard &The LizardWizard won the Hard Rock, Heavy or Punk statue. Speaking of King Gizz, they have an

ARIA nomination up their sleeve – for Best Jazz Album. That might sound strange, but Quarters! is just the latest in the plethora of genre- bending releases the group has dropped since they began in 2012, and it’s brilliant stuff. Other nominees include Barnett (eight nominations), Hermitude and Vance Joy with seven nominations each, and Tame Impala with six. The winners are to Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to seeing Hermitude live at the end of this month, and shortly thereafter I’ll be finding out whether AC/DC have still got it when they play Etihad Stadium in Melbourne in early December. After that it’s the inimitable Father John Misty at Melbourne's ForumTheatre, and then it’s festival time – stay safe everyone, and until next time, keep your head in the music. The JB Listener be announced at the Sydney ceremony on November 26.

Amazingly, people do ask if they can buy them sometimes. You can’t find decent records in op shops any more, so I just look for the silliest covers I can find.”You can, however, find the good stuff at JB; Ken counts Parkway Drive, Bring Me the Horizon andTame Impala amongst the store’s best sellers. “Actually, the big one for us in the last couple of weeks is the seven- inch single fromViolent Soho, Tinderbox ,” he adds. Ken concedes he’s biased, but there’s also been a lot of love for Courtney Barnett’s Sometimes I Sit andThink, and Sometimes I Just Sit . “I saw her at the Metro a couple of months ago; her band is amazing,” he says. “She can really play. It was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long, long time.”
