Crucify ‘Em: Making-of

If you want to get your message across, stick it on a billboard – or three. That’s exactly what grieving mother Mildred (Oscar-winner Frances McDormand) does to get the attention of a complacent local police force, who have failed to uncover any suspects in the brutal murder of her daughter six months ago. Her bold move works, raising the ire of Chief Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) and racist redneck Officer Dixon (Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell),

DID YOU KNOW...

Director Martin McDonagh was inspired to write the movie after seeing billboards about an unsolved crime while travelling “somewhere down in the Georgia, Florida, Alabama corner.” There is no town in Missouri named Ebbing. The movie was shot in a small North Carolina town called Sylva.

with beats of black humour that hit at exactly the right moments. McDormand’s robust Mildred is the heartbeat of the film – a feisty, foul-mouthed force of nature in a boiler suit, who’s also capable of compassion at the most unlikely moments. The scene was accomplished with visual effects.

Figure skater Tonya Harding achieved infamy in 1994 when she was involved in a scandal involving the hobbling of rival Nancy Kerrigan with a retractable baton. For a moment she was America’s number one villain, before O.J. Simpson stole her tabloid thunder. I, Tonya turns this debacle into a lurid, pitch black comedy that doesn’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.

excelled; the antithesis of the prim and proper poster girl, she dragged figure skating into the gutter. Robbie is terrific and plays the role with undisguised relish, but it’s Oscar-winner Janney who ultimately steals the film as the foul-mouthed, chain-smoking LaVona. As a biopic on the disgraced Olympian, I,Tonya is as questionable as the testimonies given, but as a trip through redneck America, it’s an absolute blast. SH

Structured around “wildly contradictory” interviews with those involved, including Tonya (Margot Robbie), her husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan), and her monstrous mother LaVona (Allison Janney), it purports that Gillooly was the mastermind behind “the incident.” What is clear, however, is that Tonya’s white trash upbringing clashed with the elegant sport at which she
