WELCOME My wife calls me a Blu-ray snob because I prefer to watch my films on that format. I disagree. I do watch DVDs – the majority of advance press screeners that we receive from studios for review are on this format (not to mention heavily watermarked). But for blockbusters, or a classic from Hollywood’s illustrious past, there’s only one way to watch it – on Blu. A cinemaphile for as long as I can remember, it’s not just the High-Def visual and audio experience that draws me to Blu-ray, it’s all the extras that I obsessively scrutinise for every detail of information I can find about the film I’ve just seen. Blu-ray now has a monopoly on bonus features like director commentaries, behind-the-scenes documentaries and deleted scenes, which makes recent fan favourites like Deadpool and Star Wars: The Force Awakens all the more essential on Blu. Moreover, the collectable nature of the format makes it the perfect fit for limited edition Steelbook packaging on selected releases, which you’ll only find in JB stores. Until the uptake and range of 4K UHD titles increases, Blu-ray remains the benchmark for High-Def home entertainment. Paul Jones, Editor-in-Chief

HARLEY QUINN TO BUST OUT SOLO Even though Suicide Squad is still a few months away, Warner Bros. is apparently already looking at a spin-off movie for anti-heroine Harley Quinn.

MARK HAMILL BRINGS FORCE TO JOKER ORIGIN STORY

A ccording to The Hollywood Reporter , the movie will also feature a number of other female characters from the DC Universe. The comic book giant has a strong stable of female crimefighters and villains – Wonder Woman, Quinn’s Suicide Squad sidekick Katana, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Catwoman – and is targeting the growing number of female fans through series such DC SuperHero Girls and Birds of Prey , which features a team of superheroines originating from Gotham City. Details are being kept closely under wraps, but THR says that Margot Robbie is the main driver behind the project, and is likely to produce as well as star in the Harley Quinn film. In a comic book universe crowded with male protagonists, Harley Quinn will join Wonder Woman as the only female comic characters with standalone features in the works. Fans

already got a taste of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , and will have to wait till 2017 to catch the Amazon warrior in her own blockbuster movie. And word from the Marvel camp is that a spin-off movie for Scarlett Johansson's Avenger, Black Widow, is being considered. Meanwhile, the Man of Steel's cousin has been gaining lots of fans on the small screen. From the makers of The Flash and Arrow, Supergirl features former Glee star Melissa Benoist in the title role, and Season One will be available on DVD on July 27. And make sure you mark July 20 on your calendar – that's when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives on DVD and Blu-ray. Margot Robbie, along with Will Smith and the rest of the Suicide Squad will hit cinemas August 4.

I n more DC news, one of the most acclaimed and best-selling graphic novels of all time is set to make its animated debut. Batman:The Killing Joke was first published in 1988, and is widely considered to be the definitive origin story of The Joker. Writer Alan Moore ( V for Vendetta , Watchmen ) wanted to explore how 'one bad day' finally drove a failed comedian over the edge, and turned him into Gotham City's most feared supervillain. The Killing Joke has been adapted as an animated feature, but be warned, it's not family-friendly, with an 'adults only' rating expected for its August 2016 release. Headlining the voice cast will be Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. Hamill and actor Kevin Conroy have a strong DC legacy as the voices behind the Joker and Batman, respectively. They've worked together on the Batman animated series during the nineties, and also lent their vocal talents to the popular Batman: Arkham video game series, which made its debut in 2009. If you're excited about Batman: The Killing Joke , make sure you check out a sneak peek on the DVD and Blu-ray of animation extravaganza Justice League vs.TeenTitans , out now at JB Hi-Fi.

EXTRA! EXTRA!

The Deadpool Blu-ray may not contain a more violent, raunchier and profanity-laden Director's Cut as many speculated it would (director Tim Miller has declared he's happy with the film the way it is), but the bonus features more than compensate for the lack for an R-rated version. The movie's massive fanbase aren't shortchanged with a handful of EPK featurettes – this disc is fully loaded! A 5-part documentary feature covers all aspects of the production in the same irreverent tone as the film. The deleted scenes clock in at 19 minutes and include a significant sequence that Miller (who provides an optional commentary track) calls the 'Cancer World Tour', in which Wade takes a trip to Mexico in search of a cure. Look out for Nathan Fillion, too. 'Deadpool's Funsack' rounds up all the promo material that bombarded us prior to the release, and the gag reel is of course a belter, with the improvisational nature of a lot of the lines providing ample alternate takes. It's a return to the generous package of extras we used to get in the early days of Blu-ray and DVD. As Deadpool would say, "Maximum effort!" BEST BLU-RAY BITS

BLACK COMEDY Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling have a mutual admiration society going on, bonding on the set of Shane Black’s '70s-set crime caper, The Nice Guys . By Gill Pringle

“I still remember being pulled from the scene to go to school in the trailer – it’s a weird life to be a child actor. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you feel you have no other choice what to do,” he says. Both actors received their own share of bruises and scrapes on the set, Crowe even breaking his nose. “Oh my God, I crawled to my trailer every night,” says Gosling. “I felt for Wile E. Coyote and everything that he had gone through in those Warner Brothers cartoons. But even though it hurt, I also love that stuff. Falling into a pool, crashing through a plate glass window or getting hit by a car. I couldn’t get enough of it.”

C rowe plays a small-time enforcer to Gosling’s clueless private eye, and both actors were surprised to learn how funny the other one was. Crowe has been a Gosling fan since he saw him in Drive five years ago. “I went backwards from Drive to see where he came from and I’ve seen everything he’s done since. We just laughed really easily and that’s not something you could have predicted,” he says, referencing a slapstick scene in a men's restroom where Gosling is sat on the john juggling a magazine, a cigarette and a gun. “That was our first day together on set,“ says Gosling. “And I had my pants around

corner and we are both laughing because this is so stupid and that was the moment where I felt like this is going to be fun.” If Gosling’s Holland March is a pretty useless PI, then he’s an even worse father – cringing at how he had to treat Angourie Rice, the child actress who plays his screen daughter. “Russell and I were constantly like, ’Oh my God this is just so bad. How can we do this to her?’ But she was totally unfazed and such an incredible kid with such a great perspective, even though we were both very apologetic all the time,” says Gosling, 35, who began his own career as a child actor.

Independence Day: Resrugence

Twenty years after the original movie, Independence Day: Resurgence sees the world faced with a new alien threat. Luckily Earth has a new hero, and he’s a Hemsworth…

W hen iconic FX-fest Independence Day was first released, Liam Hemsworth was six. He remembers watching the alien invasion epic on VHS but says he had no idea he would be starring in its sequel exactly twenty years later. But every Independence Day needs its hotshot, cocksure hero, and Hemsworth fills Will Smith’s boots perfectly as Jake Morrison, a US pilot serving in the Earth Space Defence (ESD) unit who lost both his parents in the original attack. “He's a little bit more outspoken than I am. A little bit more of a rule breaker than I am. His ego is a little bigger than mine – I don't really take myself too seriously,” says Hemsworth, reflecting on the role. “We begin the film with him being a forklift driver on the moon. And because his ego got in the way, he made a bad decision.” Independence Day: Resurgence , which will be invading cinemas in June, sees the planet much changed in the two decades following the first attack. Having harnessed some of the advanced technology from the spacecraft wreckage, a global defence programme (ESD) is in place to prevent further invasions, with a military base established on the moon. The trouble is that in the meantime, the aliens have also greatly advanced their technology and are hungry for revenge. The film sees Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman return in their respective roles, and, like the original, it's

Hemsworth, who is best known for his role as the rebellious Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games franchise. Growing up as the youngest of the Hemsworth dynasty on Phillip Island, Victoria, he is also used to defending his corner and admits that whilst he and brother Chris are close now, as kids it was a different story. “We're both so like-minded and so stubborn that we would constantly fight for whatever we thought was right!” says the 26-year-old. “There was one time when my parents went overseas for a couple of months and me and my brother Luke stayed at my grandma and grandpa’s house, and Chris had to stay at my uncle's house because we were too much trouble for my grandparents. We couldn't be together without having a fight.”

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

X-cessive.

O pening with a short prologue that's better than all two hours of Gods of Egypt , the biggest X-Men movie to date introduces the first mutant, whose seemingly unlimited powers include the ability to transfer his mind into a new body. Then things grind to an abrupt halt as the film spends far too much time introducing younger, 1980s incarnations of existing X-Men – although Kodi Smit McPhee's Nightcrawler is a welcome addition – and revisiting the Stryker/Wolverine subplot. The most interesting of these reintroductions is Magneto's new life as a family man in Poland, before a personal tragedy sees him reverting to his wicked ways and predictably siding with the enemy. Watching Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) continually switching sides in every film is getting as boring as Prof X (James McAvoy) declaring he sees the "good" in them. But what about the bad guy? Apocalypse is at its best whenever the godlike, eponymous mutant (Oscar Isaac, under loads of latex) is on screen, even if his motivation to destroy the world isn't exactly clear. The X-Men films have always stood apart from their Marvel siblings by taking a less is more approach. However, in its haste to cram as many characters as possible into a narrative that doesn't really need them (like Rose Byrne's CIA agent), Apocalypse succumbs to the kitchen sink brand of filmmaking that's now de rigueur for superhero epics, burying them and any nuances under all the CGI rubble. It also seriously undermines the mutants'

ongoing battle for tolerance and acceptance that has always been at the heart of the franchise. Given the scale of destruction unleashed (it's not called Apocalypse for nothing), it won't be long before the UN are regulating the X-Men like their Avengers counterparts. Moreover, after three consecutive adventures, it's time for the First Class (and Bryan Singer) to take a school holiday so that Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, et al, can return for a more focused and satisfying film. And maybe bring Deadpool along. Scott Hocking

BAD NEIGHBOURS 2

RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: Nicholas Stoller CAST: Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron RATING: MA15+ Anyone who might have guessed that a sequel to Nicholas Stoller’s atrocious 2014 comedy (a generous description) Bad Neighbours would not only be consistently funny but also include compelling social commentary has a remarkable degree of intuition. Bad Neighbours 2 improves on the original in every way. It also bucks the recent trend of unfunny American comedy. The narrative situation from the first film is revisited, unbelievably, and the characters are shoehorned into an almost impossible scenario. But we know that going in. Marc (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) are expecting their second child and preparing to move out of their house when the sorority sisters of the Kappa Kappa Nu move in next door. The mission of the sorority is to break free of the misogynistic culture associated with the female relationship with fraternities. With 30 days to go before the house sale is finalised, Marc and Kelly team up with their old nemesis, Teddy (Zac Efron), to disestablish Kappa Kappa Nu. There are no villains in Bad Neighbours 2 . The behaviour of Shelby (Chloë Grace Moretz), the leader of the sorority, may not be savoury but it is understandable and comes from a decidedly principled place. The commentary on gender equality is unexpectedly edged and the humour surprisingly effective. Who'd have thought it? John Roebuck BASTILLE DAY RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: James Watkins CAST: Idris Elba, Richard Madden, Kelly Reilly RATING: M The influences are in plain sight in James Watkins’ Bastille Day . It’s the latest in the long line of Die Hard rip offs, which, between White House Down and Olympus/London Has Fallen , have seen a startling resurgence of late. An American pickpocket ( GoT 's Richard Madden) living in Paris becomes the principle suspect in a terrorist plot after stealing the bag of a bomb mule. CIA Agent Briar (Idris Elba) must locate the thief before France’s national day of celebration, Bastille Day, escalates into riots. Madden and Elba make a terrific duo and there are moments in Bastille Day that shine, thanks to some energetic direction from Watkins – the film blasts from one action set piece to another, which distracts from the plot holes and the improbable nature of some of the narrative developments. Bastille Day is a lively and amusing way to kill a couple of hours, particularly for action enthusiasts. John Roebuck

RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: James Bobin CAST: Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter RATING: PG

Follow-ups to children’s classics – Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator and Through the Looking Glass – are usually less fondly remembered, if they are remembered at all. This Disney sequel isn’t exactly memorable either, but it’s less gaudy and grotesque than Tim Burton’s 2010 film, which somehow managed to gross a billion dollars. And – curiouser and curiouser! – it’s actually the more entertaining of the two. Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is now a ship’s captain who’s been travelling the globe for the last three years. Returning home to London, she’s given the choice of losing her father’s ship or her family home. But before she can worry about that, she’s lured back into Wonderland through a magic mirror, where she discovers her friend the Hatter (Johnny Depp) is not so much mad as depressed over the whereabouts of his long lost family. Determined to set things right, Alice commandeers a gyroscopic time machine and returns to the past to discover the whereabouts of the Hatter’s kin. The theme is time in this ‘Days of Future Past’ take on Lewis Carroll’s classic, so naturally the message for kids is that you can’t change the past, and to cherish every second, minute and hour. Oh, and family is important too. Darker and more melancholic in tone but no less crammed with colourful CGI, some of which looks pretty good in 3D, Alice Through the Looking Glass might lack a sense of wonder, but unlike the first film, you won’t feel like you’ve eaten a kilo of M&M’s by the end. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

When is an Avengers movie not an Avengers movie? When it’s a Captain America movie subtitled Civil War . The righteous soldier out of time is still the focus, but the Avengers ensemble all play a major part, sans Thor and the Hulk. Which leaves room for Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and a certain webslinger from Queens to make up the numbers. The collateral damage from the Avengers’ attempts to save the planet leads the world’s governments to demand the UN regulate the team. Tony Stark agrees to sign the new accord but the Cap refuses, fearing this will compromise the team’s ability to respond to future threats. It doesn’t help that Cap’s old army buddy Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), aka The Winter Soldier, has reappeared and has his Avenger pal’s support, adding fuel to an already volatile situation. The Russo Brothers never lose control of this potentially unwieldy Marvel juggernaut, alternating the hyperactive action scenes with comic relief, ethical dilemmas and thriller tropes, while effortlessly introducing Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and the new Spider-Man (Tom Holland). Of all the Avengers, Captain America has pulled off a hat-trick in the standalone Marvel movies: The First Avenger is a cracking Saturday matinee-style adventure, The Winter Soldier a propulsive espionage thriller, and Civil War is all kinds of awesome – a massive movie that sets a new benchmark for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Major Dundee (1965) Directed by Sam Peckinpah First Cutand Betrayal Part 4:

C olumbia's vice president and numerous studio lawyers had arrived in Mexico determined to fire Sam Peckinpah from the production and replace him. But although Sam's erratic behaviour had alienated most of his cast and film crew, a few cast members rallied R.G.Armstrong , Warren Oates, L.Q. Jones and Ben Johnson all threatened to walk off the set if Peckinpah was replaced. Heston went one step further and offered to forfeit his $200,000 salary if the studio relented and let Sam finish the movie. Much to Heston's surprise and chagrin, the studio willingly accepted his offer, which meant that the actor worked on the film for nothing. However, Heston's generous gesture allowed Peckinpah to retain the director's chair until the film finally wrapped at the end of April 1964. By the time Sam returned to Hollywood to begin post-production work on Major Dundee, his personal relationship with producer Jerry Bresler and Columbia executives was so dire, Bresler would have much preferred to have kept Peckinpah out of the editing process altogether. But Sam's contract had guaranteed him the right to a first cut of the film and to screen that cut at a public preview. One of the basic tenets of studio post-production was that the first cut of any motion picture was usually no more than raw material of the finished product. Peckinpah was aware of this, but he also believed that the public was the ultimate arbiter of a movie's quality and consequently, only an audience and not the "studio suits" could decide if a picture really worked or not. Peckinpah sensed that amongst the around their beleaguered director. Charlton Heston, Richard Harris,

to work, sifting through 400,000 feet of exposed film. The assistant editors noted that the first sequence of edited scenes were all pure gold, realistically captured by award-winning cinematographer Sam Leavitt. Moreover, these scenes featured well defined, character-driven dialogue that immediately set the tone Peckinpah had been striving to establish for the film. The first scene introduced the authoritative Major Amos Dundee, as he arrives with his troop at the burnt out Rostes farm. Whilst Dundee attempts to muster volunteers to rescue the kidnapped Rostes children, he orders his scout, Samuel Potts, to locate the Apache, adding: "Do not get yourself killed, as that will inconvenience me." The next scene is the capture of five Confederate escapees, led by the flamboyant Captain Benjamin Tyreen (a standout performance from Richard Harris). The five Rebels are sentenced to be hung for killing a prison guard. Dundee then offers Tyreen a reprieve if he and 20 of his men volunteer to serve their country's flag and join his expedition. A defiant Tyreen replies, "It's not my country Major Dundee. I damn its flag and I damn you. I would rather hang than serve." However, to save his men from For almost four months Peckinpah toiled in Columbia's editing room until finally, he had a first cut of two hours and forty one minutes the scaffold he reluctantly agrees, "But only until the Apache is taken or destroyed." Thus in the film's opening scenes, Peckinpah had skillfully established the plot and a cast of disparate characters consisting of rival factions who hate each other more than the Apache they are after. The open hostility of this dysfunctional group is slightly tempered with the scene of Dundee leading his ramshackle command out of Fort

nostalgic scene was an homage to John Ford's famous cavalry trilogy, but Peckinpah had no intention of delivering a traditional Ford cavalry film. For almost four months Peckinpah toiled in Columbia's editing room until finally, he had a first cut of two hours and forty one minutes. However, he told Bresler that he felt he had been somewhat impetuous and as a consequence needed to put another ten minutes back in before the first public preview. This would make it closer to the three hour movie as originally conceived, and if the audience reaction proved positive, it would vindicate him once the studio executive realised his version worked. But producer Jerry Bresler and Columbia Pictures had other ideas. Whilst he waited for Bresler to make

arrangements for a public preview, Peckinpah busied himself with sound effects and selecting a composer for the music score. But without Sam's knowledge, instead of organising a preview, Bresler took the director's cut to NewYork and screened it for a number of theatre exhibitors. Their damning verdict was, "too long and too violent." On his return to Hollywood, Bresler relayed the verdict to Peckinpah, whose immediate reaction was, "To hell with the theatre owners, let the public decide after the preview". But the producer remained adamant that the film needed to be cut to a two hour running time, which Peckinpah vehemently disagreed with. The following morning when Sam drove up to the studio front gate, the guard told him he was under strict orders not to admit him and passed him a large cardboard box containing Peckinpah's personal belongings from the studio office, which had presumably been cleared out the night before. Sam Peckinpah was no longer an employee of Columbia Pictures and would have no further input into the post- production of Major Dundee . The ruination of Peckinpah's version of the film now moved into its final phase.

To be concluded...

Scott Hocking talks Jennifer Jason Leigh, 70mm and Ennio Morricone with THE HATEFUL EIGHT director, QuentinTarantino.

Q uentin Tarantino’s flair for savvy casting has revived a number of dormant careers in Hollywood: Pulp Fiction (1994) heralded John Travolta’s comeback, while Jackie Brown (1997)

reminded moviegoers what they loved about Blaxploitation legend Pam Grier back in the seventies. The Hateful Eight ’s wildcard is Jennifer Jason Leigh, who was a prolific and prominent presence on cinema screens throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s in films like The Hitcher , Single White Female and Last Exit to Brooklyn . “I ended up having a Jennifer Jason Leigh film festival when I started thinking about casting her, so I literally watched those movies

decision to cast her? “In the ‘90s, we all felt that

Jennifer Jason Leigh was the female Sean Penn,” Tarantino astutely offers. “She didn’t just give performances, she gave these huge performances that the entire movie was built around, and that’s what I needed for Daisy Domergue.” At the risk of this interview becoming a mutual appreciation of Jennifer Jason Leigh’s talents, the subject moves on to other Hateful Eight cast members, in particular Tim Roth’s Oswaldo Mobray – a role that could well have been written for Christoph Waltz. But Tarantino frowns at this suggestion. “People have been saying that about Tim and it actually disturbs me a little bit; it makes me feel bad about myself. “I think it’s possibly because I dressed him in grey,” he reflects. “I really think that’s part of it. To me, Tim is playing such a posh, British twit, and I would never cast Christoph Waltz in that role. But because I made him so visually like Christoph, he’s not getting the credit for what he’s done, and I almost think it’s my fault, frankly.”

you’re talking about, as well as Eyes of a Stranger , Heart of Midnight , Georgia and Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle ,” Tarantino recalls. As outlaw Daisy Domergue, “wanted dead or alive for murder”, Leigh is on the receiving end of some brutal abuse from her captor, ‘Hangman’ John Ruth (Kurt Russell), and Tarantino laughs when I suggest that she has made a career out of playing mistreated characters.
