A simple premise is transformed into a tense and terrifying nail-biter by director John Krasinski. Set in the aftermath of an invasion by blind, spindly monsters that zero in on anything that makes a sound, the film focuses on a family who have managed to avoid being eaten by creating a silent sanctuary for themselves in a secluded farmhouse. unbearable levels – it’s less a case of if someone will tread on an exposed nail on the stairs than when – and the movie’s largely silent soundscape is conducive to some wonderfully effective jump scares. Don’t Breathe successfully manipulated viewers with a similar concept, but A Quiet Place trumps it as a superior and unmissable horror-thriller. SH
