WELCOME As a direct conduit between film studios, TV networks and a devoted audience of fans, San Diego Comic-Con can’t be beaten. The access to never-before-seen footage and trailers, breaking news, celebrity guests and tie-in merchandise is unparalleled. But it’s also about the sense of community and camaraderie that develops among strangers united by a common interest. There’s nothing to fear when sleeping rough on the street in order to be at the front of the queue for the most popular panel the next day; everybody’s looking out for you. Bonding with someone over which series of Star Trek is the best ( The Next Generation of course) can lead to a lifelong friendship, or at least make an endless wait in line bearable. What was once a guilty pleasure is now something to be celebrated, and terms like ‘nerd’ and ‘geek’ are no longer derogatory. For four days every year, the San Diego Convention Centre and surrounds becomes another world, where humans and aliens, heroes and villains can all co-exist in a state of harmony, and just as importantly, forget about real-life problems and focus on the fun stuff. With the DC and Marvel universes expanding exponentially, new and established television series attracting a greater viewership with every season, and more and more characters being created to cosplay, that world will continue to get a whole lot bigger.
