WELCOME I can remember when I first witnessed the transition from VHS videotape to DVD. Trekking around the world as a young, ebullient backpacker, I stopped off at my sister’s, who had just bought a DVD player. The film was John Carpenter’s The Fog and I was astonished at the significant leap in picture and audio quality. Since then, we’ve had Blu-ray, still of course a current format delivering a far superior package than DVD, but there’s been a new kid on the block for a while now - 4K Ultra HD. At first, 4K-enabled TVs and players were, for most of us, simply unaffordable. However, that was then and this is now; 4K TVs, players and movies are now competitively priced, and the pathway to the 4K home cinema experience has never been easier. So why 4K? Without drilling into the deep, tedious technical specifications, there’s currently no better way to view films under your own roof. In short, Ultra HD is four times better than Blu-ray, delivers incomparable picture quality and colour, and new standards in audio definition. This month, the film team at STACK has selected ten 4K UHD titles that showcase the format in all its glory. Please beware though; when you do take the plunge, it’s very hard to go back, but my word, the jump is definitely worth it! Paul Jones, Editor-in-Chief
