AMY WINEHOUSE BACK TO BLACK (2006) Put aside all the tabloid headlines, and it’s pertinent to remember that Amy Winehouse was a huge talent – here’s your proof. Fuelled by heartbreak and inspired by a love of ‘60s girl groups, along with some top producers, the 21st century soul diva crafted an all time classic album. Yes, yes, yes. TOP TRACK: Back to Black FAST FACT: Mark Ronson said he liked working with Winehouse because she was blunt when she didn’t like his work.

RADIOHEAD IN RAINBOWS (2007) Emerging from the band’s dreary sonic experimental odyssey, In Rainbows would reveal Radiohead’s strongest set of songs in a decade. Innovation remained a primary driver, weaving in and out of more conventional song structures. This was the sound of Radiohead returning to Earth, and they had ultimately changed for the better. TOP TRACK: Weird Fishes/Argeggi FAST FACT: The album was initially released as a pay-what-you-want download.

ARCTIC MONKEYS WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT’S WHAT I’M NOT (2006) One of the most exciting debuts in music history, the precocious Alex Turner’s knack for capturing the zeitgeist of British youth in 13 tracks is incomparable. Energetic, witty, and intelligent, this is mid-Noughties Britain wrestled into a sonic time capsule. What a way to announce your arrival! TOP TRACK: I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor FAST FACT: The album’s name was taken from a quote in Alan Sillitoe’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning .

MISSY HIGGINS THE SOUND OF WHITE (2006) First appearing on the music industry’s radar through one of triple j’s early Unearthed comps, Missy Higgins released her award-winning debut, The Sound of White , in 2004. The landmark album produced massive hits, Scar, The Special Two, and The Sound of White , and remains one of Australia’s most popular and influential albums. TOP TRACK: Scar FAST FACT: Missy Higgins wrote the album track All for Believing at the age of 15.

GREEN DAY AMERICAN IDIOT (2004) After mixed reactions to their Warning album, Green Day had a rethink. A punk rock opera wouldn’t normally be the answer to anything, however, Billie Joe, Mike, and Tré smashed it with politically charged belters like Holiday, Wake Me Up When September Ends , and, of course, the title track. TOP TRACK: Boulevard of Broken Dreams FAST FACT: This concept album was in keeping with Green Day’s aim to have a “Beatles-like arc to their creativity.”
