# 1 MY FIRST ALBUM

Pain Remains by Lorna Shore. I know its not “recent” as its from 2022,

but it still hasn’t left my record player in a while. What’s your all-time favourite album and why? Heaven Shall Burn’s

The first album I bought was Let’s Dance by David Bowie when I was 13. But the first album I acquired was when I was given Suzi Quatro’s self-titled debut album for Christmas when I was 5. On vinyl. I still have it. I was nuts about it. Can the Can and 48 Crash were massive songs back then. I was mad for it. I was desperately in love with Suzi Quatro. The cover is Suzi in leathers, with the rest of her band all wearing blue singlets and jeans, with one of them skolling a beer. “Wow,” I thought, “look at these ruffians, this is awesome.” Sadly, I’ve never met Suzi, but I’d love to. Darren from Powderfinger has met her. In fact, I think they might have even written a song together. BERNARD FANNING

Iconoclast holds a massive soft spot and always will. I saw them at Soundwave in 2012 and I went to Wacken Open Air in Germany both in 2017 and 2023 mainly just to see them, and songs from this live in that atmosphere was incredible. Do you have a vinyl collection? If so, how did it begin, and expand? I got Heaven Shall Burn’s Veto when it came out in 2013 from the now shut down 78 Records in Perth and it kind of just rapidly grew from there, especially when we started stocking vinyl. Working at JB since 2012 probably does not help shrink the collection... What do you enjoy most about working in music at JB? When I worked in music I thoroughly enjoyed seeing what was out, doing the new release wall, and seeing what people were buying. I especially enjoyed when customers had the same music taste as me and I could recommend them bands and vice versa.

What’s an early, cherished music memory? Probably my first concert, which was Slipknot and Machine Head in 2008. I was 14 and was only allowed to go if my brother-in-law took me. Luckily for me, he jumped at the fact and we went together. Which recent album do you currently have on repeat?

Five words to describe yourself: Curious, fidgety, loud, dogmatic, empathetic. Your all-time favourite album? Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue . You can hear every nuance bar the ash falling from the cigarette. What did your most memorable school report say? Absent 212 days. At this point, I’d started playing electric guitar and only wanted to do that. Not something I’d recommend, but sometimes you have

What’s the most ridiculous item you’ve ever put on your rider? A kettle to boil water. Your funeral song? Santo & Johnny’s Sleepwalk . It puts me in a good space every time. Happiness is… Having my family and extended family close, and a drawer full of clean, folded T-shirts.

to be single-minded. What would be your Hard Quiz expert subject? Getting stains out of clothes. For reasons unknown to me, I’ve become the authority on these matters. Song you wish you’d written? Someday We’ll All Be Free by Donny Hathaway. An amazing piece of music. If you weren’t a rock star, what would you be? A lighthouse keeper. It’s always been a really romantic idea: being cosy in

a cylindrical structure, reading books, playing music, cooking, with a Schnauzer on my lap. Last album you bought? Kara Jackson’s Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love? An artist who makes me believe that music is in a good place. Aside from yourself, which musician would you most like to be? Jimi Hendrix. The more down the road I get, the more I realise how special he really was.
