JEFF NICHOLS
Jeff Nichols arrived on the scene with his powerful 2007 film Shotgun Stories , starring Michael Shannon, and broke through to the mainstream with his coming-of-age drama Mud (2012), starring Matthew McConaughey. With Shannon appearing in all eight of his directed films, including his latest, The Bikeriders , Nichols has become one of Hollywood’s most important voices. Southern Gothic atmosphere Although this particular hallmark of Nichols’ output becomes less prevalent as his body of work expands, the majority of his films have been set in America’s south, exploring the region’s unique landscapes, culture, and working-class people. Being an Arkansas native, he has been able to tap into the region’s various nuances with great effect. Themes of family and loyalty Relationship dynamics are at the forefront of all of his films. Themes of unity and loyalty ring true with characters often facing important moral dilemmas and challenges that test the strength of bonds. Whether it’s a married couple, a father-and-son, or biker brethren, his focus on these dynamics makes Nichols’ work powerful and relatable. Naturalistic cinematography There’s an inherent beauty in all of Nichols’ films, which is owed to the environmental setting of each story. With wide angle lenses and the use of natural light, the geography of the land provides a natural stage for his drama to unfold, again making his stories all the more relatable. October is coming at us like a freight train, bringing with it some massive titles. One of the year’s biggest hits, Twisters , will be yours to own, as well as the chilling third chapter of the A Quiet Place saga.
