AN ORDER OF SUBSTANCE

know,” Hook recalled in his book Substance: Inside New Order. ”Nobody knew it was ex-Joy Division. The surprise on peoples’ faces as we set up and played was priceless.”

Upon original release, Substance (1987) compiled 12” versions of New Order’s singles up to that point alongside B-sides, new recorded versions ( Temptation and Confusion ), and True Faith: a freshly released standalone hit single. Remastered collections of this highly influential act’s best-selling album to date (over a million copies sold) have just received the reissue treatment on multiple formats, so we thought to share a coupla fun ’n’ geeky facts! Deliberately writing ”a hit” In creating True Faith , the only new song on

Substance , Sumner recalled during an interview: ”I think we got a rather large tax bill, and we sat down with [producer] Stephen Hague to write a hit.” The song’s seminal music video, resplendent with opening face-slap-to the-beat scene, was directed by French choreographer Philippe Decouflé.

Brandon Flowers, a mad New Order fan, named The Killers after the fictional band in Crystal ’s accompanying music video. The Killers later paid homage to this clip in their music video for 2004 hit Somebody Told Me .

The No Names to the rescue For their debut performance following the tragic, untimely passing of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, the remaining trio – Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris (keyboardist/guitarist Gillian Gilbert joined later) – were billed as The No Names, since they were

songs were the result of experimenting with new sampling technology. According to Gillian, Bernard and Stephen worked out how to use the Emulator 1 ”by spending hours recording farts.”

DOLLY ROCKS! One of our fave Dollyisms is particularly apt in light of the Queen of Country’s rock’n’roll detour: ”I’m not going to limit myself just because people won’t accept the fact that I can do something else.” Words Bryget Chrisfield

Many of Dolly’s ’friends’ who joined her on stage to perform Jolene during her Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction performance grace Rockstar’ s liner notes: Pat Benatar ( Heartbreaker, which also features Benatar’s partner in music and life, Neil Giraldo), Sheryl Crow ( You’re No Good, alongside Emmylou Harris), Rob Halford ( Bygones , which also features John 5 and Nikki Sixx), Simon Le Bon ( My Blue Tears ) and Pink and Brandi Carlile, who appear on (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. It’s a bit Dolly Does Karaoke, but as if you’d ever snatch her mic if she were hogging it? A fter the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations were announced, Dolly Parton responded, ”Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right. I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.” But the Rock Hall proceeded with the process anyway, and she was voted in. So, in typically can-do

fashion, Dolly recorded her 49th solo album Rockstar – which comprises nine originals and 21 covers of

classic rock songs, for which she often collaborated with the songs’ original artist/s – to justify her induction.

Rockstar by Dolly Parton is out now via Big Machine/Universal.
