STREAM MACHINE! If you’re getting into PC gaming with an eye to streaming or other content creation, you’re going to need some extra kit. No worries, here’s a guide to the essentials.

CAPTURE While you can usually record your PC gaming via software, you’re probably not going to want to take resources away from the main attraction. This is where a game capture device comes in, freeing up your PC’s power, and giving options of capturing other footage, such as from games consoles, too. Elgato HD60 X External Capture Card Grab your 4K gameplay at 30fps or 1080p at up to 60fps, complete with HDR10 support. Perfect for PC, or even to capture all the latest console play, including from PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

CAMERA You’ll want something to point at you and make you look good to the world. Depending upon your budget, this could range from a smartphone to a webcam to a dedicated camera. Cameras onboard smartphones can offer superb quality, although you’ll likely want a stand or tripod to keep them steady. A webcam is a sensible middle ground, especially for streamers, as they generally mount atop your monitor, which keeps them firmly planted and pointed right at you. If you want the best quality, then drop the extra bucks for a top-line mirrorless camera.

Samsung Galaxy S23 A brilliant 5G phone that packs a seriously powerful triple lens camera system, and can record in 8K at 30fps, or 4K at either 60 or 30fps. For Full HD shooting there’s a very handy Super Steady mode, too.

Logitech C922 Pro Stream Webcam A great budget option for getting going, this webcam features autofocus and low light correction, and shoots 1080p at 30fps, or 720p at either 60 or 30fps. It even captures stereo audio.

Sony ZV-E1 Mirrorless Full Frame Vlog Camera Featuring all the bells and whistles, and possibly then some, this top-of the-line mirrorless camera brings advanced features including improved stabilisation and a set of cinematic vlog presets.

MICROPHONE You’ve got quality video sorted, but just as important is your audio. Considering that some people listen to streamers without watching, it could be argued that it’s the most critical piece of the equation. While smartphones and many webcams come with built-in mics, if you’re really serious about this content creation business then you’ll be looking for a top-quality dedicated microphone, and likely a boom arm to keep it both manoeuvrable and steady.

ACCESSORIES Other items to consider adding to your arsenal include a green screen, allowing you to blot out whatever may be behind you – from messes to nomadic housemates - and also superimpose static or moving backgrounds. If you’re streaming, you may find that a Stream Deck is your new favourite helper. These handy devices store complex keyboard shortcuts, can launch software, sounds, and more, all at the simple push of a button.
