Though it's celebrated as Australian born and honed, Mushroom Records has been home to some major international acts across the label's lifespan (particularly in the mid-'00s), including Madonna, ABBA, Nelly Furtado, Garbage, and Muse. DYK?

If you're a Foos fan, you're no stranger to the fellas employing some pretty flimsy and ridiculous methods of title choice (see their 1995 track Weenie Beenie , which last year Dave Grohl admitted he named after a Virginian hot dog stand when he couldn't think of anything else to call it). The Colour and the Shape was named after a phrase the band's producer Gil Norton (famous for producing some of Pixies’ most adored albums, including Doolittle, Bossanova , and Trompe le Monde ) used to describe an old bowling pin he'd bought at an op shop – and the reason they used the British spelling of 'colour' was because Norton is himself Liverpudlian. But what is the atomic looking structure that dominates the album's artwork? It's not any sort of existing molecule; you might find an oblique hint in old interviews that the Looking back at the stories behind our favourite album covers, this month it's Foo Fighters' hit-jammed sophomore LP, The Colour and the Shape (1997). spheres are actually bowling pins seen from the top. The generally proffered answer from the fan hivemind is that the design is a made-up chemical compound dubbed Footonium, the properties of which remain a magical mystery.
