We were feeling the femme in nu-metal this time 20 years ago, when Amy Lee and her band Evanescence blew the reigning boys (Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit) out of the water with debut single Bring Me to Life . Head online to read our five fascinating facts on the story behind this seminal track!

Nirvana’s ultimate grunge anthem, Smells Like Teen Spirit , was inspired by the following phrase that Bikini Kill songwriter/ vocalist Kathleen Hanna scrawled on Kurt Cobain’s bedroom wall during a wild party: “Kurt smells like teen spirit.” At the time, Kurt was dating Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail (who inspired another Nirvana song, Lounge Act ) and Teen Spirit was her deodorant of choice – geddit? Unaware of the deodorant

connection, Kurt just liked the feeling of rebellion within this phrase, and the rest (as they say) is history. BC

Looking back at the stories behind our favourite album covers, this month it's Ed Sheeran's mammoth third album of 2017, ÷ (" Divide ").

During media rounds for his Grammy-winning 2017 album ÷ (" Divide "), English pop gun Ed Sheeran revealed that he'd made a brand new pal: infamous British artist Damien Hirst. Hirst came to major public attention in the early '90s, when he exhibited a series of controversial sculptures which presented dead animals (a shark, a lamb, a pig, and more) bisected and suspended in tanks of formaldahyde (inciting both uproar and acclaim from critics). In the 2010s, Hirst became interested in inventing a machine which could create art. Enter Ed: the singer-songwriter visited Hirst's Gloucester studio and became fascinated with Hirst's 'spin painting' machine. The device rapidly rotates a flat canvas lazy susan style, while the artist pours paint onto its surface from a height (usually atop a ladder). The centrifugal force of the canvas's rotation propels the paint outwards into a spiralled pattern. Hirst allowed Sheeran to experiment with his home-made machine, and the dreamy, cyan-blue splatter of ÷ 's cover was born. ZKR
