WELCOME
The origins of the smart home stretch back to the mid-’70s, but it wasn’t until the introduction of the radio wave platform Z-Wave in the mid-noughties that the potential for smart home integration was realised. Following the initial bewitchery associated with smart home devices came the realisation that this technology was both practical and beneficial. Today, many of us rely on our smart homes, but for those yet to take the first step, we’ve created a comprehensive room-by-room guide to building the ultimate smart home. Homegrown talent Matt Corby adorns the music cover and releases his new album, Everything’s Fine , this month. Plus there’s new music from DMA’S, Jen Cloher, Gorillaz and Lana Del Ray. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh ( Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri ), The Banshees of Inisherin is a dark comedy that explores the demise of a lifelong friendship between two best mates (Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell)), and is our movie cover for March. Nominated for nine Academy Awards, it hits home entertainment on the eve of the Oscars ceremony this month, prompting us to select some other worthy nominated films that belong in every home collection – and make some bold predictions on the categories they’re likely to win. In games, the much-anticipated remake of Resident Evil 4 arrives, and we chat with its producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi. And for wrestling fans, WWE 2K23 slams in, bulging with the larger-than-life presence of John Cena. Paul Jones, Editor-in-Chief

STACK ’ s TECH tips
MARCH TECH Technology has become an integral part of Australian lifestyles and continues to advance in leaps and bounds. From smartphones to smart homes, STACK keeps you up to date on the latest consumer tech in user-friendly terms, along with key points to consider before you buy. If you love tech, you’re in the right place.
Video calls are the way of life for many working from homers in 2023.The following are a few tips to help you look good and get the best experience from a call.
1 It sounds obvious, but jump on and check your tech is working before the call starts. Waiting for software updates before you can join the meeting is not ideal. 2 While it can be tempting to sleep in a little later when working from home, don’t jump on a call looking like you’ve just woken up. Clean, uncreased clothes with a plain pattern are best, and flatten that cowlick! 3 Position the camera at eye level, never below – it’s not our most glamorous angle… 4 The best light is natural, so lift the blinds or draw the curtains. If that isn’t possible, use a ring light behind your monitor. 5 Find a quiet space to take the call and use a decent pair of headphones – not all audio on video calls is easy to catch. 6 If your surroundings are messy or untidy, choose a virtual background. 7 Most video call services offer a preview before you begin the call. This is an excellent opportunity to check exactly how you will look to others on the call.

What was the hottest tech in…
Today, smart home automation technology is used daily in homes right across the globe. But close to 40 years ago, a product emerged that promised to revolutionise the ‘80s American home. When two inventors brought the idea of a sound-activated device for the house to the doors of Joseph Pedott, a clever marketer with manufacturing means at his fingertips, the shrewd American spotted an opportunity. That opportunity was the Clapper. It promised the future, a Star Trek-like fantasy where clapping hands together could turn on a light, a coffee machine, or a TV. Two devices were plugged directly into the Clapper; one was activated by two claps, the other by three. Inside the Clapper, a microphone puts the sound signal through filters, identifying a clap's correct (read as approximate) sound frequency. Pedott devised
Do you have a tech horror story? Has tech come back to ‘byte’ you hard? Have you sent a text to the wrong person or deleted your employer’s hard drive by accident?Well, we want to hear about it. Send your terror byte to editor@stack.com.au This month, J. Bianchi recalls her tech nightmare. T his was more of a tech nightmare for a friend I strongly suspected was seeing my boyfriend at the time than it was for me. I needed some hard evidence, and it was simple to get. One afternoon after work, the three of us met up for drinks. After about 30 minutes, I excused myself to use the toilet but not before, after pretending to rummage in my bag for something, hitting record on my iPhone. I was gone for a good ten minutes, and sure enough, when I got home later that evening, details of their recent romantic liaison and a future planned catch-up had been recorded. It was everything I needed to say goodbye to the two of them.
Clapper
On The Radar Our April big feature in tech is always cameras, and next month we’re going to be pulling together a comprehensive look at what’s new in that space. We’ll also be tapping the minds of some professional photographers for tips on the craft.
a television campaign that drove viewers mad, but the campaign worked - unlike the actual Clapper, that didn’t really work. It wrecked some TVs and was so sensitive that sounds on the television could activate it. Even dog barks, a similar sound frequency to a hand clap, would set it off. Pedott turned to another inventor who re engineered the Clapper, so it did work, and two years later, the product was relaunched as the fiscally successful Smart Clapper. The Clapper is still produced today in the U.S. as a novelty gift in the lead-up to the festive season.

The smart home revolution has brought convenience, comfort, security, and energy efficiency to millions of Australian households. If you’re considering the move to connected and automated living, we’ve got you covered – from where to begin, to what you’ll need to smarten up every area of the home. Words Bec Summer
No expertise required
A lifestyle of convenience awaits Control everything from lighting, blinds, and security cameras, to heating, cooling, laundry, vacuuming and more with preset instructions (known as ‘scenes’), or by simply talking to your tech. Set daily routines, like awakening to freshly brewed coffee, a warm house, and a morning news summary tailored to your interests. The set-and-forget convenience of smart home automation lets you enjoy more downtime by assigning everyday tasks and chores to connected devices. And you can leave home content in the knowledge that
The good news is you don’t have to be a sparky or an IT wizard to build a smart home; the simplicity of smart home tech can convert even the most ardent technophobe. Most devices are designed for easy set-up and connection, although some basic DIY may be required for installing brackets and attachments, and wired security systems could require a professional’s touch. From little things, smart homes grow Partial or full home automation is a matter of personal choice, and of course budget. Joining the smart home revolution can begin with something as basic as a smart light bulb, smart plug, or door sensor. Determine what parts of the home you want to smarten up – lighting, security, and everyday appliances, et al – and explore the plethora of products and possibilities. Planning and building a smart home can be both fun and addictive.
Choose an ecosystem A smart home ecosystem connects all the smart devices on your home Wi-Fi network, enabling communication between them. The hub or app is the command centre for management and control, so you should choose a platform that’s compatible with your existing smart devices. The major players here are Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Samsung SmartThings, so it’s likely you’re already using one of these virtual assistants on your phone.
the stove or iron is definitely off. Save power, save money
The ability to monitor power usage makes smart homes more energy efficient and good for the back pocket. And a smart water-controller for the garden hose will further reduce wastage and utility bills.

Joining the smart home revolution can begin with something as basic as a smart light bulb
Building a smart home is both an exciting and rewarding process, provided you set off on the right foot. Here are some simple tips to start you on the journey to automated and intuitive living. 1. Get what you need Plan what you want to achieve by making your home smart, and stick to it! It’s tempting to invest in a swag of devices you may not ultimately need, so set a goal and a budget, and stay on target. 2. Smarten up existing devices Older or ‘dumb’ devices can be automated by the simple addition of smart plugs and switches, but always check their compatibility first. 3. Locate dead zones Most smart home devices rely on a strong Wi-Fi connection, and barriers like thick walls and certain construction materials can impede signal strength. To locate these dead zones, simply pick up your smartphone and observe the signal as you walk around the house – although chances are you already know exactly where they are.
Some devices may not require a hub, however. For example, some smart bulbs have inbuilt Wi-Fi and, depending on the ecosystem, many devices can be controlled directly from a phone app. Set the scene In the smart home lexicon, a ‘scene’ is basically a sequence of commands that manages devices and can be set up via your chosen platform’s smartphone app. Creating scenes is analogous to programming a computer, albeit more straightforward and dummy-proof. For example, set a scene that will unlock the front door and turn on the lights when you arrive home, or one that shuts everything down for the night when it’s bedtime. You can also create the impression that someone’s at home while you’re away on holiday by programming indoor and exterior lights to turn on and off at predetermined times. Scenes can be as simple or complex as you choose, and are easily customisable and expandable to include additional commands.
4. Make a mesh Setting up a mesh network is an easy way the eliminate those aforementioned dead zones. A router is served by ‘satellite’ units, which link up to create consistently
strong overall Wi-Fi coverage throughout the entire home. 5. Learn to geofence
Think of geofencing as a virtual blanket across the home that’s linked to the GPS on your smartphone. Connect smart lights, security cameras, and locks, and when you depart in the morning, once the GPS on your phone is out of range, lights will switch off, cameras will activate, and the front door will automatically lock. The reverse will happen upon your return.
DID YOU KNOW? Smart home device uptake continues to increase exponentially, with technology analyst firmTelsyte forecasting the market will grow to $5.3 billion in 2023, and the average Australian home will have an estimated 33 connected devices by 2026.

WHAT IS ‘MATTER’ AND WHY DOES IT MATTER? A new, universal wireless connectivity standard brings unification to the smart home space and eliminates confusion over device compatibility.
From music and movies to shopping lists and when you want coffee in the morning, a smart home knows your personal preferences and routines, which naturally raises privacy concerns for many. The good news is that smart home devices are designed to be safe and secure, with manufacturers constantly updating and improving security. Moreover, there are a number of simple cybersecurity steps you can take to further safeguard sensitive information. Check the device’s privacy settings and adjust accordingly. Always install system/firmware updates ASAP when prompted, or set system and app updates to download automatically where available. Consider keeping devices containing sensitive personal information – like a laptop – on a guest network that’s separate from your smart home network, or vice versa. Choose strong passwords with a minimum of 12 characters (including numbers and symbols), and use a password manager so you don’t have to remember them all. Enable two-factor authentication for further peace of mind. Ensure your home Wi-Fi is protected by a strong password and high security protocol. Avoid naming your Wi-Fi network and never access your smart home ecosystem through open or public Wi-Fi. Your smartphone is your universal remote, so protect it with a passcode, facial recognition or fingerprint security, and make sure ‘find my phone’ is activated. SECURING YOUR SMART HOME
A smart home ecosystem provides a simple and efficient way of controlling all your devices, but communication between different brands can sometimes be hindered by proprietary software and hardware, requiring users to juggle multiple apps to control them. But what if they could all speak the same language? That’s where Matter comes in. A universal wireless connectivity protocol for interoperability, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) and launched late 2022, Matter offers seamless and secure connectivity between smart home devices regardless of the manufacturer. Matter-certified devices can ‘talk’ to each other directly using local Wi-Fi or a Thread mesh network (with support for ZigBee and Z-Wave) and can operate offline, so if your internet connection goes down, your Matter-enabled smart home will continue to run smoothly. Matter also simplifies smart home setup and operation by standardising device communication and control across
hubs, apps, voice assistants, and cloud services, and major industry players are already onboard. Matter-certified products will work with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Samsung SmartThings. The ‘Matter controller’ that runs the system can be a smart home hub like Apple HomePod, Google Nest Hub, or Amazon Echo, as well as their respective apps for both iOS and Android phones. Supported smart home and sensors, HVAC controllers, smart TVs, and roller shades/blinds, with a forthcoming update set to encompass security cameras, fridges and washers, air purifiers, and garage door sensors. Manufacturers are also adding Matter compatibility to some existing devices via firmware updates. By boosting buyer confidence in product compatibility across different manufacturers and platforms, Matter is poised to further increase the uptake of devices, as well as effectively future proofing the smart home. devices currently include light bulbs, plugs, locks

A hub is basically the nerve centre that controls each type of connected device via a centralised app for a streamlined smart home. It enables them to talk to each other, and the user to easily set scenes and schedule routines. Unlike smart speakers, hubs offer dedicated controls for supported devices and more customisation options.
Smart hubs will smarten up a room and can double as a clock or digital photo frame, and stream music and video content.
Simple to set up, they are an ideal entry-level device to begin your smart home construction, and can be positioned anywhere. A central point in the home is usually the best location for easy access by all family members. They also pump out awesome audio and can double as a portable music speaker, although check durability and water resistance for outdoor use.
Top tip: Choose one that’s compatible with your chosen ecosystem and smartphone OS.
Top tip: Hubs keep the whole family connected and are best positioned in a common area of the home.

SMART SECURITY CAMERAS Once upon a time, not so long ago, if you wanted CCTV cameras installed at home, you’d be ringing professional surveillance companies and having to steady your legs when the quote came back. Surveillance technology is now far more accessible to the consumer with easy step by-step installations that even the staunchest technophobe can master. You can buy cameras as wireless units or wired, which will suit different living conditions. If you rent or are planning to move, then the portability of wireless cameras is recommended; you can take them wherever you go. Wired cameras offer a more permanent solution. The benefit is that a wired camera requires a power supply, so you don’t have to worry about recharging batteries. CCTV cameras can be installed externally and internally. Many security cameras offer two-way audio, face recognition, motion sensing, voice assistant capability, sirens, and night front entrance, rear entrance, hall, lounge, garden, garage vision features, with some external models combining a camera with a spotlight. Our experience is to opt for the highest you can afford when it comes to resolution. A lower resolution camera is better than no camera, but if you want to capture details like number plates, you’ll want 2K resolution and above. Wireless cameras are easy to set up. Generally, once a companion app is downloaded, it’s as simple as scanning a QR code, entering a Wi-Fi password, and the camera is up and running. External cameras require some basic DIY skills to drill a hole and screw a bracket to a wall, but that's it. A wired system will involve tracing cable back through a ceiling space and potentially down the inside of a stud wall to a router. There’s a little more involved, but, as we’ve already mentioned, if the residence is permanent, it could be worth considering a more reliable connection and a constant power source – think set and forget. Finally, let’s talk about subscriptions. Many cameras require a monthly sub to access rolling cloud storage and additional features, while others have either onboard storage via an SD card or directly in a hub that records footage for free. If you’re reluctant to add yet another subscription to your monthly budget, look for a camera with onboard storage.
Top tip: A camera connected to a home Wi-Fi network is only as good as the signal it receives. Consider installing a mesh network if your home has dead spots or a weak signal from a router.
SWANN 2K OUTDOOR CAMERA Wired and weatherproof with night vision and a motion-triggered spotlight. Includes 24 hours of rolling cloud storage that can be increased with a subscription.
SWANN 2K INDOOR WI-FI CAMERA Can detect people, motion and heat, and has a built-in alarm, voice assistant support and expandable SD card storage for recording.
SWANN ALLSECURE650 The complete package, with two-way audio, a siren, a 105° wide-angle lens, and a heat and motion detector. Avoid subs with a massive 1TB of storage in the hub.
EUFYCAM 3 4K CAMERA Maximum resolution in crystal clear 4K, facial recognition tech, colour night vision, a spotlight, 16GB of internal storage, and solar battery charging.

SMART LIGHTING If you’re after an exciting update to your living space, one of the easiest ways to add some flair is to get creative with smart lighting. Whether you’re looking to retrofit your existing lighting or add to it, ready for any mood ranging from chilled party to full-on rave, there are options aplenty. Plain white? Literally millions of colours? Bulbs? Downlights? Lamps? Strips? Start with a simple setup, or go all-in? The choice is yours. Smart lights are a doddle to get going – just install your chosen product’s smartphone app and it’ll guide you through the necessary steps such as hooking into your Wi-Fi. The hardest part is making layout decisions for your snazzy new smart lighting setup!
