HOW DO THEY GET THE LEAD IN PENCILS? If you’ve ever wondered about this – we certainly have – then it’s surprising how complicated the art of making a good, classic pencil is. It all starts with graphite sludge, which is processed until eventually it’s a fine paste that’s then formed into thin rods via metal tubes. Then come the wooden bits, where the leads are laid into shallow grooves of specially prepared timber that are half a pencil’s diameter, and then an identical piece is quickly glued on top, before they’re cut into correct lengths, and then painted. So, if a friend or relative has told you that they thread the lead into holes in solid wood, you now know that they were pulling your leg! Not that any of us ever fell for that one as kids…
