A GALAXY OF FEATURES
GO PRO Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch5 series also includes a premium model with a focus on outdoor activities, robust design, and some exclusive features. Touted as Samsung’s most
powerful and durable smartwatch to date, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro 45mm is a rugged wearable sporting a titanium case and 2x tougher Sapphire Crystal protecting the face. Designed for the great outdoors, the Pro has enhanced GPS and features you won’t find on the Watch5. The all-new Route Workout mode enables you to import GPX-format workout routes from a third party app to the watch and sync them to your chosen activities, be it cycling or hiking. And getting lost when you stray from the path is no longer an issue with Track Back, which, as the name suggests, will reverse a path taken all the way back to the starting point. You’ll be guided, too, by turn-by-turn navigation prompts – just like a car’s GPS. The Pro packs a big battery for those outdoor adventures, with up to 80 hours of life and 20 with continuous GPS use.
Samsung’s new GalaxyWatch5 brings a holistic approach to health and improves upon its predecessor with a bigger battery, more durable design, and a redesigned 3-in-1 sensor. Words Bec Summer
Go with the Glow An advanced women’s health feature, ‘Glow’ will prove particularly beneficial to those in the family planning stage. It tracks the menstrual cycle using data that’s input into a daily log to determine cycle history (including fertile windows and ovulation days) and predict when
Tough stuff Samsung has ensured that the Galaxy Watch5 can take a licking and keep on ticking. It’s their first smartwatch protected by sapphire crystal, adding extra durability and greater scratch resistance to the face/display. And an IP68 rating means it can withstand submersion in up to 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes. Enhanced heath tracking All the essential health-monitoring features are at your fingertips – steps, heart rate, blood oxygen (Sp02), sleep, ECG stats, and body composition mapping – as well as a new infrared sensor that tracks skin temperature. There is also fall detection to notify emergency contacts should you take a tumble. The 3-in-1 BioActive Sensor on the underside has been redesigned for better skin contact, providing greater accuracy when analysing body composition, electrocardiogram and heart rate. There are over 90 workout and sports modes preinstalled, from the basic to the more specialised – jumping jacks and hang gliding, anybody? Moreover, an auto detect feature for certain modes (like walking and running) will begin tracking your workout from the very first step, and pause it when you need a breather. Sleep coaching The Watch5’s sleep tracker will analyse different sleep stages and assign a score based
on the quality of your kip. For more detailed insights, the Samsung Health app provides measurements for blood oxygen levels, skin temperature and snoring patterns.
When you’ve slept with the watch on for at least a week, you can access the ‘sleep coaching’ feature on the Health app, which will then customise a four-to-five-week program including missions, sleep reports, and more. You’ll also be assigned a special ‘sleep animal’ to match your sleeping style – will you be the Unconcerned Lion, the Nervous Penguin, or the Exhausted Shark?
the time is right for an early night. Further women’s health insights can be managed using the Health app. Power to last Samsung has increased the battery capacity from the Watch4 by 13 per cent, so you’ll be good for up to 40 hours on a full charge. Fast charging support will take the level from 0–45 per cent in approximately half an hour, and a USB-C magnetic charging cable is included in the box.
