A projector might claim to be ideal for gaming, but that doesn’t always mean that it is. Projectors designed for movies and streaming can be equally proficient in the gaming arena, but dedicated gaming projectors have custom tech to enhance play. When purchasing a projector that will mostly be used for gaming, it’s always a good idea to first check the specs. Here are some key things to look out for… THE BIG GAME GAMING PROJECTORS

INPUT LAG Input lag – or latency – is the time it takes between the video/audio signal from the console or computer to register onscreen. Slow input lag is like bad lip-sync and the enemy of all gamers. A projector used for gaming should have a low input lag for seamless transition from console to screen. Lag time is measured in milliseconds (ms), so look for a projector with input lag of under 20ms. REFRESH RATE This refers to the number of times per second – measured in hertz, or Hz – a projector refreshes its image. A refresh rate of 60Hz is standard for gaming with a projector, however if you favour games with fast-moving action, a higher refresh rate of 120Hz is recommended.

BRIGHTNESS The rule of thumb with projectors is the brighter the better, and you’ll want as much detail as possible in the graphics. 1,000 lumens of brightness will suffice for a darkened gaming cave, but for a brightly lit room, go for 1,500 and above. SOUND An immersive soundscape is a vital aspect of the gaming experience and many gaming projectors feature in-built speakers with more watts than their home theatre counterparts. But you’ll always get the best results from a soundbar – or headphones for more intimate audio.
