you the option to add external speakers for even more oomph. The battery lasts four hours from a full charge, which is enough time for a blockbuster double feature outdoors – unless you plan to watch The Lord of the Rings .

The ultimate outdoor cinema experience is the drive-in theatre, where audiences can enjoy a movie from the comfort and privacy of their vehicle – or, on a warm night, a mattress in the back of a ute or a couple of beanbags on a blanket in front of the car. An American institution that Australia embraced with gusto, the first drive-in theatre opened Down Under in 1954 in Burwood, Victoria, and at the peak of their popularity there were over 300 drive-ins nationwide. But the home video boom in the 1980s quickly whittled that number down and there are now only 16 left in Australia. Drive-ins were an economical way to take the whole family to the movies, with many offering a set ticket price per carload – hiding in the boot was also common practice (providing your friends remembered to let you out). However, during their heyday in the 1970s and ‘80s, it could be difficult to find family friendly flicks because drive-ins were largely outdoor grindhouses where schlock, horror, action and B-movies reigned supreme (more respectable flicks played the cinema circuit). You didn’t go to a drive-in to see a mainstream movie, you went to see The Texas Chain Saw Massacre . But once these ‘drive-in movies’ were consigned to VHS, the program schedule became more gentrified and more multi screen drive-in theatres began to pop up screening mainstream fare. From the cacophony of horn blasts during a crowd-pleasing moment to the lousy sound from the window speaker, and even lousier Chiko Rolls from the candy bar’s bain-marie, the old-school drive-in experience will forever evoke wistful memories amongst those who lived it.
