GLOSSARY Exposure This is the amount of light which enters your camera, and is controlled by a combination of aperture, ISO and shutter speed. Aperture Simply put, this the the opening in your lens which allows light into the camera. Also known as the f-stop. ISO This setting controls how sensitive your camera is to light. The lower the number, the darker your image. But set the ISO too high and you risk loss of clarity and increased noise in your images. Shutter Speed This is how quickly your shutter opens and closes to take a picture. Set the shutter speed higher for fast-moving subjects (animals, moving people) and lower to allow more light in for still subjects (landscapes, night sky). FPS (Frames Per Second) The higher this number is, the more images you can take in quick succession. RAW The only file format you should shoot in. A RAW file takes up more room on your memory card than the default JPEG,

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a popular photography technique that uses a moving light source to add light to your subject, while taking a long exposure image. An otherwise dark scene can be brought to life with a light painting. When your shutter speed is set to an appropriately long exposure time, you can quickly move your light source – like a torch, for example – around, to create shapes in the night sky. It’s a very trial and error process, but a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.

Hard Drive A trusty hard drive is an important part of your camera bag – somewhere to

keep your projects, and memories, safe. When heading out on an outdoor adventure, you will want to take a hard drive that can keep up with wherever you are going. LaCie and their iconic orange slip sleeve design has been long associated with professional photographers, and for good reason: it's fast, reliable, and tough – three ticks at the top of a hard drive checklist.

Micro SD You won’t be able to do anything we've covered without a memory card in your camera. Samsung have recently released their 2021 line-up of cameras which includes personal favourite, the Pro Plus. Built specifically with photographers and creatives in mind, the read and write speeds on these Micro SD cards won’t slow you down.

Backpack It might be worth thinking about a storage option for your new gear. A normal backpack may not suffice if you want to avoid stacking pieces of gear on top of each other. Many camera bags come with origami-

style dividers to make sure nothing moves around while you’re in motion.

Tripod If shooting at night time is your thing, a tripod is more of a must than a maybe. Many of the top brands now have products made of aluminium for both durability, and to reduce the weight of your backpack for your hike up a mountain to capture the next blood moon. For general adventures, there are more flexible options like the GorillaPod, so you are never caught out by uneven surfaces.
