What was the first film you ever saw?

The first movie I remember seeing at the cinema was Jurassic Park . I think I was maybe seven or eight and I just remember looking up at the screen and I’d never seen anything like that before – I don’t think anyone had, really. For a young mind to be so captivated not just by the subject matter, I mean all kids love dinosaurs, but by the way it was made, and to be absorbed by that ‘movie magic’ was brilliant. I think it’s a really good early memory to have as far as movies go.

What’s the best thing about working in movies at JB?

What’s your all-time favourite film andTV series, and why?

It’s the people you meet, really. That devoted group who still care about their film collection and come in regularly to see what’s new, and like to chat about what they like and dislike. I’m a physical media person, so having that rapport with customers who are just as passionate about movies and media as I am is great.

TV series is easy: I’m going to go with Star Trek: The Next Generation . I grew up with it, and it still holds value now, which I think is great. I’ve been pretty attached to Star Trek ever since – I met my wife at a Star Trek convention! I think my favourite film is Apollo 13 , for its spectacular use of practical effects and great acting. I like a good true story, but there are sci-fi elements as well. It’s one of those films where all the components come together and it just works. I can watch it over and over again and it never gets old. It’s one of those timeless classics.

Do you have a big collection at home?

It’s slowed down a bit since the little one was born, but it’s still a fair collection. My wife and I got married three years ago and we both had pretty decent collections, which were merged, so now it’s pretty sizeable. What we lack is a shelf big enough to contain it all!

What have you been watching lately that you would recommend?

Our little one isn’t a year old yet, so we haven’t had a lot of time for movies lately. Obviously, being Star Trek fans, Star Trek Picard aired this year, and it was a very complex series. Although a lot of time had passed, Patrick Stewart turned in a terrific performance – it was like putting on a comfy old pair of shoes.
