SHOP TALK

W ith degrees in both film and audio under her belt, Emma Wilson is smack bang in the middle of the Venn Diagram which denotes the person most desirable to have on your Pub Trivia team. Plus, she can talk about film composers all day long. “I want to say there’s too many [favourite score composers to choose], but then my brain just automatically says ‘Danny Elfman,’” the Media Advisor at The Glen store smiles. “I love how jaunty it all is – and it’s very much his style from when he was in Oingo Boingo. The start of Beatlejuice always gets me!” ‘Jaunty’ is a great descriptor, and one which could be applied to Emma herself at the tender age of one. “Apparently I used to bounce around to Under The Bridge by Red Hot Chili Peppers – I don’t recall that,” she laughs. Between her parents’ various musical interests, most all decades of music were covered, so Emma’s exposure was eclectic while growing up. "Also watching my grandfather play guitar [was influential]," she says. (Emma plays guitar, bass, drums,

piano, percussion, and sings.) Her first live experience came by way of the parentals too: John Farnham. “My parents dragged me,” she says, “and I was complaining most of the time; y’know when you’re so little, and the music’s so loud? I could feel the kick drum in my body, and it was making me feel sick.” It was sickness of another kind (the rad kind) which dominated Emma’s first deliberately-chosen live show: Greenday, supported by Jimmy Eat World and My Chemical Romance. The one LP young Emma consistently pulled from her parents' vinyl collection was The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack ("There's just something about [the artwork] that looks so good!"), and her fascination with Frank N. and co. hasn’t died; she bought the recently-released 45th anniversary edition before it hit JB The Glen’s shelves. “I got the steelbook as well – and when we got the vinyl in, I was staring at [its artwork] again,” she laughs. “I really love that movie!” In terms of the best part about working at JB, it’s pretty simple: “I love being knowledgeable about music and movies, and helping customers find what they’re after – making recommendations,” she says. If they’re after a very particular CD that’s a bit obscure – I love knowing it!” Potter into JB The Glen to chat movies, music, and all the marvellous ways they collide, today.
