10 FORREST GUMP “Run, Forrest, run!” And he did, right into moviegoers’ hearts and off with a swag of Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director (Robert Zemeckis), Best Actor (Tom Hanks) and Adapted Screenplay. This revisionist take on US history is a touching story of heart over brains, with a cracking soundtrack to boot. 9 BACK TO THE FUTURE The tale of a boy and his Doc – the former travelling back to the past where he must ensure that his parents get together so that he continues to exist. Heavy! Director Robert Zemeckis's 1985 classic was the perfect storm of comedy, action, adventure and casting, that remains surprisingly, erm, timeless today. 8 GONE WITH THE WIND Although a contentious choice today given its depiction of deplorable historical events, voters – like Rhett Butler – didn't give a damn, sending Victor Fleming's sprawling southern saga into the top ten. Winner of eight Oscars in 1940 including Best Picture, with Hattie McDaniel making history as the first African American to win an Oscar (Best Supporting Actress). 7 STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Considered by many fans to be the all-time best of the 9-movie Skywalker Saga, Episode V introduced Yoda and Boba Fett, saw Princess Leia fall for Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker discovered the truth about his old man. It's also the most quotable Star Wars film of them all. 6 JAWS In 1975, a 25-foot great white shark terrorised Amity Island and cinema-goers, introducing a talented young filmmaker named Steven Spielberg and launching the concept of the “summer event movie”. A day at the beach would never be the same again!

5 PULP FICTION Arguably Quentin Tarantino’s finest film to date, this violent, hip and ultra-quotable cinematic portmanteau from 1994 played by its own rules, resurrected John Travolta’s career, and dragged quirky cult cinema kicking and cursing into the mainstream. 4 THE GODFATHER A regular top 10 inclusion on all-time great movie lists, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 mafia masterpiece is the story of the Corleone crime family and its aging patriarch, as based on the best-seller by Mario Puzo. Winner of three Oscars – Best Picture, Best Actor (Marlon Brando) and Screenplay Adaptation. 3 STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE George Lucas's rollicking, game-changing 1977 space opera wore its influences on its sleeve, introduced us to droids, lightsabers, and a mysterious Force with dark and light sides. The first episode in what would become a pop culture supernova – and a religion for some. 2 TITANIC Near, far, wherever you are, it’s likely you went to see "King of the World" James Cameron’s historical romantic epic – the first film to reach the billion-dollar figure in global box office, making it the biggest motion picture of all time until Avatar claimed the top spot in 2010. King is a perennial People's Choice favourite.
